this is an open rear end
the tell tale sign is in the uneven thread wear of the tires

quick fast way, if the rear end is sitting on the ground, if ya have the feel of a safecracker, take hold the yoke and slightly just rock it, if suregrip you should feel it as you just barely turn it back and both.

A sure way to find out your son or daughter is enjoying a smoky burn out :D

How much rubber is stuck to the rear quarters. If it is an even amount it is a sure grip. If it is mostly on the right rear it is open. :)

Do a burnout, after you have moved 20 feet or so look in the rear view mirror. If you can still see the centerline of the road you have a open rear gear. Of course this works best on calm days.

Jack the car up with the Trans in Park for an auto or in gear for a manual and the parking brake is not applied, try rotating a rear wheel. If the wheel turns freely and the opposite wheel turns in the reverse direction it's an open differential, If you can not rotate the wheel at all, or can with a good bit of muscle (The other wheel will still turn in the reverse direction), it's a sure grip.

Of course the burnout test is still the fun way to check: :D

I agree, dump the clutch. Make sure your on pavement. Burn outs in gravel, mud, grass or snow void such tests.

Oh, I know how the mechanics are supposed to check them, but my way is a pile more fun. LOL
