I advertised on website expat.com for someone to watch our property during a 25 day annual visit to Juneau, Alaska, offering the equivalent of $10.00 U.S. Dollars a day and a place to stay (maid's quarters-a 10 foot by 15 foot room with A/C, Wi-Fi, microwave, fridge, and washing machine.

I had about 500 "views" of my wanted add, and about 4 or 5 responses. The only real serious response was from a semi-retired lady from London who had previously lived in Cambodia for six years. Her duties would be to feed the two dogs every evening and water the plants every other evening, as well as provide security for the property.

She arrived on August 2nd and I showed her around until I left on August 8th. When I returned on Sept 1st, everything at home looked better than I had left it. She even scrubbed the stains away from the toilet bowl for us.

While we were away, she found her own luxury, furnished, fully-equipped condo a block from the beach to rent for the remainder of her six month stay in Mexico. The arrangement seemed to work out to the advantage of everyone involved. We were complete strangers until meeting for the first time at the airport (she flew from London to Mexico City, then connecting flight from there to La Paz).

I guess the only problem I found upon my return is my two loyal dogs now preferred her company to my own, but I can't complain, can I? It should not take too long to win them back now that she's gone.

Very cool! Finding a good caretaker is not easy! We lucked out and hired my niece to take care of our place up north. She and her husband fell in love with the area when visiting over the years. Turns out her husband, a postal worker, was able to get a transfer to the nearest town. They bought a place a few miles from our place. Both good hard working young people.

She's a bit a of clean freak.... like you, I often get there to find the place cleaner than I left it! And I don't have to worry about stuff walking away.

I have no doubt the place will be spotless when I get up there for hunting season.

Be well,
Pat
