I just can't slant .....

-
I'm not a fan inline 6 bangers, but I have had a few and dailied a bare bones 70 Dart crew cab with a slant for one winter. Have to admit, that thing was dead nuts reliable and relatively capable of getting out of it's own way. Best part about that far was that I never gave a damn about it, never locked it or worried about anything happening to it. After the muffler rotted off I drove it for a few more weeks, until the rear wheel cylinders blew out. Then I pulled the engine and transmission out and sold them, then scrapped the rest of it. Should have saved the radio delete plate though!:BangHead:

By the way, it isn't the "best" slant I've had on gas. Does about 20 mpg if driven like granny when checked a few years ago... I actually had a '74 D100 Slant 4 speed that got 24 mpg, it was a one barrel.

If I had a strip-down model (like a park ranger truck) with a /6 and 3 on the tree, I'd leave it. I love 3 on the trees... and just seems so natural for a /6 truck to have a standard shift

I drove one of them as a delivery truck when I worked for a junk yard. Early-80s fleetside. Like everything there, they'd taken it in as a junker.

Dead-reliable, easy-driving, and the bed looked like melted butter because of all the engines that'd been dropped into it.

Na they still sound “slanty”

Now that I could agree on.
I say Vixen sounds kinda like a hot Jag 6 at cruise speed. ......but it's different. They have a sound all their own. They even sound a little like a Cummins.

I hear the same kinda sound from a grand national. Not necessarily the note but the tone. It’s very specific to 6 cylinders.

Our slant is my favorite car we own. Get the compression up to 9:1 and a few improvements on breathing and they are TOTALLY different engines.

Very true, I have a 1989 Thunderbird with a 3.8 liter supercharged V6 and a 5 speed. The one thing that is clearly missing is the unmistakable V8 rumble. It's a fun car to drive and it moves alright. Power output is on par with that of a 5.0 Mustang from the same era but with IRS it handles far better and has more room.

I cut the head on one slant .100, and .125 on another head. With 2.25 exhaust and a super six, they do liven up.

9:1, oregon cams 2016, dutra duals with the Y by the transmission mount, oversized valves, cleaning of the ports, dual one barrels (offenhauser)......... makes me smile every time I driver it 5 years later.

awesome builds you do down there

I think I am burned out and a friends F100 I am struggling with the paint with is my last restoration.
Famous last words. Been there!
In a year or so something will come along that you just can't say "no" to.
Was thinking I may be done, now the granddaughter is showing a lot of interest in old cars... thinking I gotta leave her something that says "Grandpa" every time she climbs into it.

I still have the slant/904 that I pulled from the '74 Duster.... That was a decent running/shifting set up. That got pulled for the low dollar 318 .. lol

Actually, since you're going to swap it and big HP isn't the concern; wouldn't this be the ideal recipient of your hypothetical "best factory parts" 318?
Would you be interested?
Yes, it would be. That would be a cool and fun project. I just don't see this happening as I'm overloaded and booked for time. I have a few engines to choose from to drop in the truck and I haven't decided which yet.

Whisper in ear: (*Psst- 273, 273!*)

Had a 74 /6 full size pickup and after having it for 5 years I said never again will I have another /6 full size pickup and so far so good. Now my 67 Dart with a /6 3 speed stick with a 3.91 gear was fun! Beat up some V8 pickups with that thing. Had a few other simple mods like a straight pipe, open element air cleaner, flex fan, bigger jet in the 1 barrel Holley, advanced timing yada yada. Couldn't power shift it though unless I had 2 beers in me lol. Based on butt feel, probably a mid 16 at the track....regret never doing that though. Best ET with a 66 Belvedere 2dr sedan weighing in at 2950 with a /6 automatic and 4.10 gears and working factory AC was 18.10. The Dart felt much quicker....

With all that said, even a V6 Dakota sucks. My 92 Dakota with a 5.2 ran a 15.30 on factory tires and it wasn't hard at all to get the same mpg as my 95 AND 96 V6 Dakotas get and be over 2 seconds faster in the 1/4 mile. I still have those but like a DA, I sold the V8 truck. Imo, the Dakota pickups do very well for a general purpose pickup but nothing comes close to my 97 Club Cab lwb diesel....except for parking that barge.

You gotta trust the butt feel in cooperation with the 2 beer shift! It's just like people saying you can't time a distributor by ear...LOL
