Hey guys:

I am still tweaking the '71 Valiant that you may have seen other questions on....

I'm not having any electrical problems per se, but just a small annoyance:

The junkyard-picked alternator I installed when I put this collection of parts together will not charge very much at idle.

With no load it's about 13.8v at idle, 14.5v at higher speeds.

With lights on and brake lights on, it's about 13.05V at idle and 13.8v at higher speeds.

It's also rather noisy even though it looks like a reman unit(that means a lot, I know), so you think this is just sick or is there another alt that would charge better at idle?

I don't much care about high amps since this is a stripper with no AC or stereo.

Thanks!

The consensus on the 'ol www seems to be "use a Denso." Late model Dakota. Google around you'll find projects for 'em.

Frankly, it doesn't bother me all that much. I mean, afterall, just how badly do you need your headlights stopped at a traffic light?

I run a 50 amp denso unit orginally for Suzuki Samurai's. Weighs 5.5 pounds. It's awesome at idle. Doesn't even flinch when you let off the gas quick in gear and rpms drop to near stall; 450 rpm. And I still run the amp gauge and everything.

There's a guy that sells them on ebay for like $99 in a one wire version and has an internal regular of course. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ALTE...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Then by the bracket kit from ARengineering.com through Mancini or elsewhere. I think the bracket kit is like $60.

Yeah...I guess I could just turn them off. Never thought of that.

What about a smaller pulley, it will spin it faster at idle.

You may very well be onto something...the water pump pulley I'm using seems pretty large. A smaller pulley would definitely speed things up.

Yes, a smaller pulley on your alternator will make it spin faster at idle.
I just looked at autoxcuda system and I like it Thank you autoxcuda :thumrigh:

You can overdo "smaller pulleys. My original old 70Rr had what was alleged to be an optional 60? 65? amp, and after I started literally "blowing up" alternators, one day I figured the ratio---about 4:1`. This means that if the engine is spinning 6K, the alternator is spinning 24000!!!!

I ran it with modified stock bracket. I just shorted the stock adjusting bracket and made spacers for the rest. It's OK. I had to grind the alternator case some. You have to drill out the main alternator bracket holes for a bigger bolt that goes to the head.

The arengineering setup is much nicer.

Take a good look. The alternator you show above on your engine is far different than the ebay link you posted.

Yes, you are right. I know there is a version of my alternator that has a bolt on stamped steal second leg. They might sell those without the leg.

Here's what I think mine is: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=37695 ...1987 Suzuki Samurai

Anyways, you can show AndyF at www.arengineering.com the one you are looking at to see if his bracket fits it.

Here's a better link

Ditto, I have similar Denso alt. and same positive experience. But I skipped the bracket kit and made my own, saved a few bucks. I bought a few extra bolts and shimmed the alt. into alignment with the other pulleys using washers. Then cut some aluminum tubing to the same length as the "shim packs" and whamo, back in action.
