In one issue of Hemmings they discussed that and part of the reason is that oils have come a long way since the 50's,60's and 70's.

I dont think Car manufactures WANTED cars to last. Now if you dont get over 100 thousand miles on a car, You cant even get it paid for before it will be ready for the scrap yard.
