ID freeze plugs

Can anyone tell me about these freeze plugs ? What is the little do-hickey on them ?

if you overheat the engine they melt and fall off. No heat tabs , no warranty.

You see them a lot on remanned engines and heads that come from mass rebuilders like ATK and some others.

That is what they are, but they don't fall off. The center soft metal portion melts off once they reach a specified temp.. The rest same as what George said.

Yup center melt. Have seen them for years.

You will probably find them on the ends of the heads also.
