You could try it, Google "rotor phasing" and it will have the timing way off if wrong.

THAT IS assuming the distributor is compatible. Not knowing what you actually have, it's ???
 
yeah i would replaced the pick up coil and the reluctor first.

nice job fixing this its a pain for sure!!!! i had same issue.

my car has been having some overheating issues and the coil is burning up and causing the car not to start after letting it cool down till it gets completely cool. Can i put some sort of gasket on the coil bracket so it doesnt transfer as much heat to the coil or does it have to be grounded?>? its on the manifold next to the carb. Horizontally.
