What do they mean when they are talking about numbers matching and is it important? If so why?
 
The 68/ 68 or so and later cars had partial VIN numbers on the transmission and engine block. so it simply means that the car is pretty much "all original." In something that can/ could be worth 'big mony' this can be a real difference.

It would be extremely important on a highly collectible car, rare care etc. Your run of the mill generic Dart Sport for instance, like mine, it would be important to a purist (so to speak), but doesn't make the car any more valuable as far as resale goes to most people.
 
It's a vastly over used word. Usually associated with doucheliness. At least from what I have encountered.:D
