Is anyone looking for a job?

What is your degree?

You can still become a skilled tradesman.

Yes Agree.

There is this magical thing called: Transferable Skill Sets.

Regardless of the previous line of work, there are skills that can plug into the next work situation > moving you to the front of the pack when others realize the value that you bring.

If we only knew that playing childhood games and driving race cars could pay a guy millions. lol
We are so upside down, there's no coming back, come on man $50 mil a year to toss a football for 6 months
Right, & if the Flake feels like a temper tantrum, He'll intentionally whiff or drop the ball......& still collect His Millions 'cause Yo' Dawg, I deserve it.........

Lemmie tell ya. They GUN for older guys at OReilly. I had it happen to me and then very shortly after that, they made things "very difficult" for a friend of mine who was still there. He finally gave up. We are about the same age. The problem is simple math. They want to pay school kid wages. Period. I was assistant manager there for almost five years. I pulled every weekend and every week night. Never complained. I did the schedules, new hires, discipline and any terminations...which there only one I had to do. I also handled all of the parts returns, both new, defect and cores. I also got there early on Saturday mornings to check in stock. a LOT of that was supposed to be split evenly between manager and assistant. It wasn't, but I never complained. I wasn't even making 12 an hour. Everyone under me was a either minimum wage ($7.25) or 8 an hour. Just pathetic. I remember all through 2018 and into 2019, they were touting pushing "20 billion" in profit for the year 2020. I left about April of 2019. Let's just say they made things incredibly difficult, which they already were, due to my health issues. I was already on disability and working closely with social security, because I had planned on coming off SS and permanently returning to work. I started having chronic back and foot pain. Come to find out, I had plantar fasciitis. That was also causing my back pain. Although now that I'm completely retired, the plantar fasciitis is gone, thank God, but my back problems persist, along with everything else. So I'm not the sorry son of a ***** no working bum some people around here think I am. I actually TRIED to get outta the wagon and pull it. It didn't work out.

Having said all that, I cannot in any way shape form or fashion recommend an auto part "career". It will not be a career if you are older. It will be a dead end job.

Oh and they CRUSHED the 20B in profit. I don't remember what it was, but you know what the employees got? Not one damn thing.

At least they didn't lay off 20% of the employees after announcing the profits. Hey it's all about shareholder value, who cares about the people who actually do the stuff the company exists for in the first place?

I almost went into welding a while back, I'd totally do a skilled trade if I hadn't already gotten 6 years deep into engineering with a grad degree. Tons of demand for skilled trades especially carpenters.

I finally graduated from a University in 2009 with a B.A. in Spanish/Political Science. Never had a problem finding work before that time, but I have never found a job since graduating (had been working steady in various fields since 1973). All my applications were submitted online and never got a response from anyone anywhere. So ended up retiring in Mexico and restoring Mopars (not by choice at first).

I don't think they can, I've never had an application ask about sexual orientation specifically. I've never seen one ask for any kind of photo either, I'm pretty sure that's illegal and you can report them for that. They do ask what your gender and race is to comply with EEO standards and then if you are a disabled or protected veteran and then if you have any disabilities. It's all HR legal compliance rigmarole, the actual hiring managers and team members never see that information.
I didn't think they could, either. It was mentioned above, and it's been been a very long time since I've been in the job market, so I thought maybe things have changed.

I just ran into a job description that wouldn’t allow me to select or screen shoot for use with ChatGPT! I actually like having a copy for interviewing either way so I had to type it all out!! Grrr…

If you're using a computer, Notepad has a talk to type feature. Next time, open Notepad and hit the "windows" key (between alt and fn keys) along with the "H" key. Then just read what you want typed out. Might be a little quicker than typing in out by looking at it - depending how quick you type of course.

Ya, most job applications you have to create an account with the hiring company, which is a complete waste of time. And then to make things worse, alot of jobs have you manually type out your whole resume into their website.

What a pain in the neck. Do they want people to jump through hoops on fire too...

They do ask for sexual orientation and ask for a photo on some applications. Also, in the EEO section, alot of companies have options for veterans (active veteran, protected veteran, etc.), but NO option for a regular honorably discharged veteran... :BangHead:

Today I was going to apply to a company that is listing a job available (CRH), but after finding out that CRH owns 3,131 other companies (and then is owned by one of the big three (Blackrock/Vanguard/State Street), I've come to the realization that applying for a job is a complete waste of time..

Thanks to my pops and lovely mother I went to a high school that had an amazing ASE certified program, and I graduated last may in the #1 Valedictorian level for career tech, automotive etc. Times have definitely changed and both my pops and my mentor who was my HS automotive instructor didn't prepare me for hiring at places where it had no guarantee. Seriously I'm one of the most outstanding mfs out of the whole candidate pool and nothing back. I know I know, kid your not gonna get what you want but something as easy as trying to get into a FedEx or a Metro mechanics position is ridiculously idiotic, long, and never guaranteed. I remember when my pops told me about him going union and that I should go too but when it came to applying not only did AI did most of my work which was scan my resume and sort me to a listed job but those same jobs never open fully (they don't check people are actually serious about it). Something as easy as a Valvoline part time position I couldnt even get. I went to the interview which was a hiring event and there were guys in continuation school, straight out of prison, asking for baby momma care, etc. NONE of which are ASE qualified. FOR A LUBE JOB ! in terms of dealerships its pretty demanding. Ive gone to nearly all of them and as much as I saved another 2-4 years of college getting certified in high school, nearly all the major Dealerships around LA all shut the door on me. No college fair helped me and when they did, they asked why I was going to college for aviation... the college they reached out IN (my major)...... Uh Hello?
I'm a fresh adult into this world and been stated that im overqualified at such a YOUNG age is great but im not going to be young forever..... Ive had amazing opportunities at some big named placed but it sucks that the AI slop is blocking actual connectivity.

applications definetly sucked. Indeed is some BS. Im clean as a showroom R/T, great student but Indeed and LinkedIn doesn't care. Definitely ruined employment for the older, younger, and folks to come.

Around here in my area, HAVAC, is where it's at. I saw two different companies looking for technicians and starting pay is $60-$70 a hour. Unless you're going to college to be a doctor or something for computers, college is a waste of time. A local young man got his degree in computer science and computer programming and he got a job working for Boeing. Lawyers, Pharmacist, those careers are pretty much filled up. Trade school is the best way to go such as HAVAC, electricians, etc, are always going to be in demand.

If you're ASE certified can't you open your own shop? Then you can give the middle finger to da man. Two and four post lifts are almost free on marketplace all day, and nice stolen sets of Snap-on and Matco tools on marketplace are super cheap.

Especially in about five years when AI will take over all computer jobs and put millions of people out of business. I agree, any job that AI or a robot cannot do is a secure job.

I kinda wish but coming straight out of HS and full time college ain’t cheap and I do plan that especially since I graduated with my buddies a bath of 20 of them in the same program but I’d have to find a solution first shops are out of reach and becoming a backyard mechanic isn’t recognized by ASE like a authorized dealer. I’d guess that would have to come sooner or later considering I’m capable of it since I did carpentry like that before ASE. Outside world issues, I guess I’m having bad luck when applying to places

Well I knew this 21 year old kid in the last town I lived in. He worked out of his one bay home garage and charged 1/2 of what mechanics charge; and he was packed with customers every week. Within six months he expanded into a rented repair garage big enough for six cars. Personally, I always preferred the backyard mechanics because ain't no way I'm paying $110 per hour at a dealer, and I had a lot of bad experiences with regular repair shops.

The only important question you need to ask, will your potential customers care if you are recognized by ASE? Or will they just see your certificate and go, "hell yeah man please fix my car for half the price of the incompetent thieves on the other side of town"... The people running this system want you to believe it's more complicated and there are more barriers than there actually are.

Check out the Big Truck Shops, Peterbilts, Kenworth, etc. Trucking Lines...

Big trucks are actually made to work on. Top rate pay. Lots easier than these crammed up over complicated new cars and pickups.

This is why it's important to investigate the job opportunities for the field your wanting to get into, don't never believe that a school will help you get a job unless they are willing to get it in writing.

Actually, the incompetent thieves are keeping honest home mechanics in business. So next time you see an incompetent thief mechanic, thank them for helping your business grow.
