Is moulded seat foam the best way to go ?

Hi all.
Currently doing a 65 Barracuda, and whilst I’ve ordered Legendary seat skins, I was wondering if the moulded seat foam is the best way to go ?

I’ve never used moulded seat foam, and I can tell you the foam in my front buckets has completely crumbled away….COMPLETELY.

Is it that good, or better than cutting foam yourself (or having a trimmer cut it ) ? Especially if there’s not much to go by ?

I used the Legendary molded foam in a set of 66/67 and as far as I’m concerned, it’s the only way to go. I just ordered the foam for a 65 Barracuda (which is the same for other early years/models).

Everything that Legendary sells for my "68 buckets, including seat foam, I bought. Turned it over to my upholsterer. Very happy with the results.

The Legendary foam is not usable as is. At least not by me. I've done some seats that had good original foam, but was unable to make their foam fit the seat bottoms in my 65 Barracuda. The bolsters were too big, the seat part too flat. So I took my seats to a professional. He used the Legendary foam (I think) and did whatever to make it work. Here is what mine look like. I did the seat backs myself, using the original foam. My upholstery guy did the seat bottoms. They don't look exactly like they did originally (bolsters/inserts fit just a bit too flat), but are pretty darn close.

PS: If you're wondering, the door panels came from Layson's. Back seat, steering wheel and dash pad are original.

If there is little left of the old foam to go by, that's even more reason to buy molded buns that are the right shape and I would trust Legendary most to have gotten the shape right.

Not to start a pie fight, but unless its offerings have changed, Legendary offers the same buns for early A, B and C bodies and they tell you up front that their buns have to be trimmed to fit your seat covers. I tried trimming my Legendary bolsters with an electric knife and just made a mess. They did not even come close to fitting without trimming.

Now that was a few years ago. If someone speaking from personal experience with an early A body says that the fit of Legendary's foam rubber has vastly improved since then, I'll accept that. Otherwise, I disagree.

If there is little left of the old foam to go by, that's even more reason to buy molded buns that are the right shape and I would trust Legendary most to have gotten the shape right.

That’s what I’m thinking. There is literally nothing left. I vacuum it up, and there’s more the next day.

OK.....here's an update.......

Over the past few months I ordered front and rear seat covers and front foam "buns" from Legendary.

I took the seats to my trimmer to fit them - I trust him, he's done an old 61 Valiant interior for me and it was great.
In any case - as mentioned - he had an issue with the size of the bucket seat base foam. He said he had to trim heaps off because they simply wouldn't fit. That's OK....I'm fine with that, but there are some small wrinkles in the sides which I will have to live with, otherwise I'm VERY happy with them
I asked him if it was worth getting the foam even though it needed heavy modification on the bases....he said "definitely".

I might add that to get the covers and foam to Australia cost me an arm and a leg. Because of the Aussie dollar you have to almost double the price, AND......shipping cost as much as the items. In any case, here's a couple of pictures.

Those are beautiful! I need a driver side foam. It has "newer" skins, but fit loose. So I may need Legendary again in the future.
