Here is the deal....
I like the concept of the low gear 904 transmissions but from the outside, I can't tell the difference between a standard 904 and the low gear version which I think was technically called a 999.
Today I pulled the engine and trans from my 67 Dart. I installed these in the car in 2005. The trans came from my '70 Charger but I don't think it was the original transmission because it was really clean and had an orange painted torque converter.
I checked the flat machined area on the transmission case for the numbers, there are none stamped anywhere on the case like the pictures below. They are from a 999 I pulled from a late 80s Chrysler.
Those letters and numbers are an alpha numeric code to denote the date of manufacture. The trans from my 67 Dart have no numbers.
This may help....
Did ALL low gear 999 transmissions come with a lockup converter?
This transmission does not have a lockup, the transmissions with them had an unmachined end to the input shaft like this:
My Dart transmission shaft is machined all the way to the edge. IF all 999s had lockup converters, that would make my transmission a standard 2.45 1st gear unit.
Thanks!
