is the column shift mechanism for a big block Dart different from a 340/727 Dart?

I have a friend building a 1971 Dart with a 383 and a 727. Is the column shift linkage the same as a 340 if they are both 727s? If not, does anyone make column shift linkage for a big block in a Dart?

Pretty sure a 727 would be same from one to other, but make sure that it has a factory arm and not one that someone had a BM/ other aftermarket shifter.

I’m not sure that they ever built a big block A-body car with a column shift since they only offered them in GTS’s, Formula S’s and ‘cuda’s which were available with consoles as standard.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say definitely "maybe".
It's all going to depend on what he's using for exhaust- A body BB logs, BB HiPo manifolds, or Doug's/Tti headers...
I'll give a hard "no" to the HiPos, since the coulumn housing has to be cut back for clearance and that would eliminate the column linkage.
Also doubtful that there's room for it with headers, but I could be wrong. I know there can be issues on B bodies with the 2" Ttis but not the 1 7/8 or 1 5/8... and B bodies have quite a bit more room than As; but Doug's fit with room to spare. I think your friend needs to call Tti or Dougs and see if they can shed any light on it if that's the way he's going.
No idea with the A body manifolds, but I would think they'd be the best bet.

Consoles weren't standard on a 69 GTS. Buckets seats were but the centre console was an option. 68/69 GTS's were available with a 383 big block so I'm under the impression that yes there was a big block with column shift. Also I'll add that the standard seat in either a Dart GT or GTS convertible was a bench seat. So it's possible for a GTS 383 convertible with auto transmission had a column shift.

The z bar pivot bracket on the transmission side could be different. Everything else is the same.

could you get a floor shifted automatic without a console?

The floor shift automatic only came with the console. They didn't offer a floor shift automatic without it.

I'm dating myself but if you use Fenderwell headers, column shifter, the linkage from 904 lines right up.

Yes, I’ve built about 20 cars with big blocks and about 1/2 were column shift. My 68 Dart 270 has a big block with column shift. I put HP C body manifolds on it. Then sold it and the guy put headman hustlers on it. Now I got it back and I am putting manifolds back on it. Kim
