My wife has a 17 compass and she loves it.
Zero problems, hers is a stick shift.
 
There is a specific "Trail Hawk" model of the Renegade that's "trail rated", although you can get AWD in every trim class (Sport/Latitude/Limited).

I believe for '19 the 1.4 six speed manual is no longer an option.
Not sure why as from what I've read (and that was a LOT before purchase), it was far less problematic than the 2.4 nine speed auto, and gets noticeably better MPG.

All the ones Ive seen are 2.4 but the 6 speed manual is still available.
 
I had one of the new Compasses as a rental car a few months back. My only gripe was a lack of grunt. It wasn't exactly gutless, but another 25 ft-lbs of mid range torque would make a big difference.
