My Scag Wildcat zero turn just broke a pump drive belt. I'm going to order a new Stens cogged belt off the internet. Can't find any locally except at the dealer 25 miles away and twice the price.

The local Ace hardware has a belt that will fit but it's not cogged. What is the difference between cogged belts and non-cogged belts as far as operating? Does the cogged belt have better grip? If so, why aren't they all cogged?

The deck drive belt is NOT cogged. Are they designed to slip in case you hit something?
Thanks

It depends on who makes the belt.

If it's made by Cogswell, it's cogged.

If it's made by Spacely, it's not.

Either one will work.

Heh Heh Heh

Wait a minute! That's Cogswell Cogs and Spacely Sprockets. What's that got to do with belts?

Is the "cogged" portion on the top surface of the belt? Does it touch anything while in use? If the answers are "No" then there is absolutely no difference between them (with the exception of manufacturer aesthetics).

I love the Jetsons reference!!!

That's funny right there :)

In some cases a very heavy/thick belt will need to fit a radius below its flex capabilities.
The solution is to form reliefs in the belt.

I kinda thought that. The pump pulleys are about 2 1/2" and the shaft drive pulley is closer to 7". The belt is 5/8" wide by 65 1/4" long. I looked at my neighbor's zero turn, a Hustler, and his is the same way - cogged for the hydraulic pumps and smooth for the deck belt.

Still, They do manufacture fan belts both ways. Is that just for looks?

The cogged belts are cogged to run cooler. It allows more surface area to radiate heat off of.

It's an old Jetson's reference.

When you mentioned "cogs", Cogswell Cogs came to my mind....

Just put it up for a quick laugh.....

I also think the "cogs" in the belt were also supposed to help the flexibility/bending of it around the pulleys.

They are not necessary, either style belt will work.

I know that! I thought it was pretty funny, too! I wondered how many people knew what you were talking about. Kinda dates us, doesn't it.

JETSON! YOU'RE FIRED!

I own three commercial zero turn mowers, a Gravely, a Toro Z Master and a Lesco walk behind.

I have my belts made by a local belt supplier/maker. Better quality, last longer and cheaper too!

OK, so the belts that you have made, are they cogged or smooth? I have no doubt that they are probably better, much better.
I have encountered prices from $15 to $100. Of course, that seems to be the norm these days.

Wow! thanks for the info! You're not such a Bad Sport after all! LOL

I usually walk in to the auto parts store and have them match up my belt. If the number is on it or you have the number they can usually cross reference it. Napa has been the best around here.

I bought one in a pinch at the parts store and didn't get one lawn mowed before it broke. The belts I get are far better quality than I can even get from the dealer. The one on my Toro has been on there, oh, I'm guessing 4 years now and I have mowed a bunch of grass, even stuff 18" tall.

Just a followup to thread I started a coupla months ago. I bought the smooth belt at Ace Hardware for around $15 just to get by until I ordered the cogged replacement belt. The smooth belt finished out the season and I'm now mowing and mulching a ton of leaves. I'm sure there is a reason for the cogs, but this smooth belt is working fine.
