I don't think the spring itself is much lighter if any lighter at all. It is the spring tension that is lighter or less stiff. They are used on cars with fiberglass hoods because they don't need as much spring tension as they are a lot lighter and the heaver springs will cause the glass hood to crack when you try to close it.
