I have been noticing that my 318 does not idle down quickly. With my old intake and carb and my new setup. I have been reading alot on here about timing. Anyways I was messing with it today with a timing light and some new marks I made on the balancer to see where I'm at. Right now I have it at 12 deg initial but ran out of daylight to figure out where I'm at at full advance.
I noticed that if I give it some throttle the timing advances,(normal) when I release the throttle it takes forever for the engine to get back to my idle speed. I pulled the cap off the distributer and twisted the rotor and it seems like it's hard to turn. Should the rotor be able to turn and then snap back eliminating the vac advance freely ??
Here's a pic of my distributor

Should have some "spring." The rotor on a SB should turn "against the spring" CW and should spring back pretty much instantly. You probably have rust, gum, thick oil/ grease gumming up the works.

Getting the vacuum advance off

After carefully using two screwdrivers to pry the reluctor off the shaft, there's a tiny clip down in the hole of the top shaft, pull that out and you can get the mechanical advance mechanism off and apart

A good article. Now would be a great time to consider recurving (shorten the mechanical curve)

agree with above. I'd replace the return springs too just because you'll have it apart. It's possible that they are weak now.

I opted to get a new dizzy. Got the mopar performance kit with the dizzy, harness and control box from summit. All is good now. I might add that I had to pull the intermediate shaft to get it lined up. The slot on the dizzy that I pulled out was pointed to the front of the intake while on ready to fire on #1 cylinder. Had to pull out the gear drive and rotate it sideways to the engine so the rotor was at ready to fire on #1 cylinder. Good magnet pulled it out.
Why should I have to rotate the drive gear 90 degrees on a mopar dizzy ?

"It has been found" that not all distributors are made the same. You didn't "HAVE" to do that you could have simply moved the plug wires.

Glad you got 'er fixed. Does your new one have adjustable advance?

Yeah I could have moved the plug wires, but I chose to pull the gear. no biggie took 3 minutes. when you say adjustable do you mean the allen wrench in the
vacume hose bib adjustment ?
Thanks for the comeback Dell.

No, my understanding is that some of the late model Mopar dist.s came with an adjustable mechanical advance similar to Mallory. Look down in through holes in the advance plate, and bump it a little. Should be able to see the screws if so.

One of the members on here local to me had one, we changed the advance in it

Similar to below
