I managed to get my screwed up cam out this weekend. When I inspected it I found that the lobe's had all tarnished somewhat and some even had some very small pits.
I came to the following conclusion. With the engine sitting for 2 years I believe the oil on the lobes ran off and then condensation formed inside the engine on any surface that did not have oil on it. Any surface that was covered by a bearing of any sort is in good shape.
Now, when I primed the engine before I started it, the lobes did not get any oil on them due to the fact they are splash oiled. When I started the engine the #5 intake lobe and lifter must have had some serious friction issues and the process of wear started, never to be stopped.
When I look back, 20/20 hindsight, I should have taken the intake and valley tray off and pre-oiled the cam. Even at that I don't know if the cam would have survived long.
Well, $250 later I can say live and learn.
