This is how I tightened my two post mirror head. After pushing in on the glass I removed the locking ring and then removed the glass and spring. I then used a pair on my welding vice grips as shown in the pics to compress the black plate on either side of the ball. Worked like a charm. I didn’t protect the chrome with anything and I didn’t damage the outer body but I would suggest some painters tape to both protect the chrome and prevent slipping although I had no issues.

The door mirror moving as I drive has been frustrating for me too. Glad to see some smart guy figured out how to make a fix. Congrats midlife!!

Just an update on the mirror post. I see that my mirror started to loosen up again so I took it apart and realized that without flattering the two rivets it didn’t matter how tight the black metal brace was. Using the same method I compressed the rivets and now the mirror is very tight. Again, work slow and check your work as you go.

There is a very thin narrow flat ring (like a C clip) of spring steel at the edge of the mirror head and glass. It has a split in it that I grab with a dentist pick to pull it out. Be careful that your glass doesn’t fall out once you remove the C clip. There is also a regular spring in there that sits behind the mirror. That allows you to push the glass in slightly to grab the retaining ring. I tried to post a picture showing the split in the ring but it’s very difficult to see. It literally sits inside of the mirror head. You should be able to see it when you push the glass in
