Loud Mufflers

Put a new Pypes exhaust system on my newly restored 68 cuda and the mufflers are overly LOUD. Sounds like I'm in a metal garbage can being assaulted by a ball peen hammer. I bought the system several years ago from Summit, and now the choices have been changed as to what kind of system is suitable for a particular purpose. The car has been totally insulated with that stick on insulation and the noise is still unbearable. My brother has dynomax mufflers on his 408 72 Scamp, and the noise is almost non-existent. Stock original sound insulation. Anyone have experience with which mufflers offer a quiet alternative? Thanks!
 
Dyno-Max is the way to go.

You can take those Flow-Master mufflers directly to the recycle bin. Ting, Ting, Ting they go, with plenty of Drone coming back into the car.

Yes DynoMax on 2 1/2" TTI exhaust.

No headers, stock exhaust manifolds. Performs a well as it sounds.

There's a lot of difference between the sound of a two and a half inch and a sound of a three inch it's much harder to muffle down a 3 in exhaust system. I just went down this road and ended up 3 inch to the muffler two and a half out the tailpipes I used AP max turbos they sound really nice.

Dynomax ultrflows, no drone and quiet at cruise. Sound great at wot. I skip the turbo anything mufflers, not my bag.
I've heard bad things about pypes setups.. but never tried them.
Jegs had a decent mufflers they supply woth their exhaust kits, from the header back mandrel bent with mufflers, used to be 250, prolly 400 now.

If quiet it what you're after, stick with stock mufflers. Or if you like your brother's mufflers, why not go with what he has?

Different selections when I bought mine a while back. Would have chosen the Turbo Pro if they were available. Looks like Dyno-max might be the winner.
 
I've got Doug's headers blueprint iron head 408 TTI X pipe 2.5" to dynamax with turndowns. I love the way it sounds not to loud, I did sound deadening all over the floor. My GF didn't complain of noise on 1000 mile round trip.
 
I have the Dynomax Ultra Flow welded muffler on mine and like it a lot.
 
I can see why you had trouble picking I did too.
Pypes only had 3 choice when I bought my Pypes System. I just wanted to stay with same brand so everything would fit. Less install trouble.
So went with Pypes mufflers.
i am sure after reading many threads i was wrong doing so. And should have gotten Dynomax ultrflows. Oh well
No way I wanted Violators to loud so were out.
And salesman said ( and it sounds goofy)
The Race Pro sounds more quiet at idle than Street Pro louder when go pedal applied.
The Street Pro has more aggressive idle than Race Pro. But less loud when go pedal applied.

So got Street Pro. Figured aggressive idle but less loud under acceleration.

Seems strange.
And sure will have to live with it because I have zero money to change now. What I have will have to go on car and will live with it.

Live and learn. Cars and parts are always a mixed bag. Ive spent so much energy experimenting. Part of the process...

Excellent info on Pypes. So many differences between cars, engines and other aspects. Seems like Dyno-max appear to be the best choice for a reasonably quiet ride. Getting old. Don't want to go completely deaf!

I agree. We get stuck buying ahead of time a lot of times because we cant buy everything at once. So have to live with choosing what we think is right or best.
Mine won't go in until the stroker 340six (422six) does.
Exhaust shop was outrageous. Plus headers.
If I had to do it again would have Extrude-Honed my early 340 manifolds. And had them Coated inside and out.
In retrospect not that costly when you add up what I have.
Put 2.5 pipes, Ultra Flows and stock tips out back.
I let people talk me into Headers again. Listening to everyone's opinion that I was going to lose so much Horse Power and Torque without headers
So
Dougs Coated 453 headers

Figured need electric cut outs (Bought cosmetic blems)

Pypes 2.5" X Pipe system

2 stainless Street Pros

2 Hangers for stock tips

2 Stock Stainless tips

I run Dynomax welded ultra-flows on my Duster- 340 with Dougs D453's into a Summit 2.5" exhaust system. Interior on my Duster is lined with FatMat as well.

I really like them, but they are not quiet. At cruise I'd say they're fairly moderate for a muscle car system, and at WOT they're more than moderately loud. Personally I think they sound great, but they have definitely gotten louder as they've been on the car for awhile.

Given your feedback that you're wanting a "quiet alternative" , you might want to consider the DynoMax turbo mufflers. The ultra flows are not crazy loud, but, they're not what I would consider a "quiet alternative" either.

Here's a clip shortly after I installed the DynoMax welded ultra-flows. This is like 10 years ago now, and they're louder now than they were when this was recorded.

Mine isn't what I'd call quiet either, BUT the one thing I do like is there is NO DRONE. I mean none. Yeah, I can hear it at cruise, but there's no drone involved at all. And to make it clear to the OP, if one was gonna drone, it'd by mine, because it's a hot slant 6. What I did was look through the Ultra Flow flow chart and I chose one of the part numbers they have listed that "supposedly" flows better than an open pipe. There are a few different ones to choose from.
 
I went with Quiet flows but still had a bad drone until I put a Amazon resonator in front of them.
