Low/Reverse Band Adjustment Problems

Good afternoon, everybody. I’ve got this set up on an a904, age unknown. All I know about this thing is that it has the small bore servos which I understand to be a pre-1972 trans. Anyhow, manuals claim that the band adjustment is 72in lbs. I’ve heard the turn out is 2-4 turns, but even still, the band is far too tight. With the air check, there is little to no response movement on the clutch drum. At 6 turns, I am seeing results, but I am well beyond the 72in lbs spec. This worries me, and manuals/videos are useless for this type of arm is not the usual. Any tips or advice?
 
You tighten to 72 In pounds and then back off the 2 turns. Is that what you're doing?

That's only 6 ft pounds.

Following what the doctor ordered. The other option is 41in lbs with 7 turns out and that worries me. Just needing a little guidance here.

Are you turning the CENTER screw out the 2 turns and not the outside locknut? The only reason there's even a torque spec is to assure the band gets all the slack out. I don't even torque them. I just tighten it snug and back out the two turns. But back out the CENTER screw, not the lock nut.

Correct. I am turning the center screw, not the lock nut. I’ll roll with that advice. Just a heck of a thing for me to mess up. I appreciate the help!
 
On the driver side rail of the case just above the pan/gasket area you should find numbers.Near the neutral safety switch location.
Those numbers should get you the date and the vehicle the transmission came in.
Look up My Mopar and find the chart with all the years and dates. That way you will know what you are working with.
I do believe that some later years had the 4-7 turns.I would do a bit more research since that is a internal adjustment.

Choose a year that covers the age of the trans, there should be numbers on the trans that can be decided to year range

The numbers are pretty worn, but this is what I got from what is there. Manuals didn’t give me much based on the “existing” numbers. I’ll scour the MyMopar page in the meantime.

1974 model slant 6 transmission.
 
I get 75 904 console shift for a slant 6.

3743476 was available in both 1974 and 1975 but the date code shows this transmission was built on October 21, 1974 which would be 1975 model year.
Both the 74 and 75 factory service manuals state that the low-reverse band should be tightened to 41 inch pounds then back off 7 turns for a slant six.
 
Thanks everyone for the help. I do find it strange that the servos are small bore, though. Not a problem by any means, but I thought small servos were usually in earlier models.
