Hey gang, I’m working on a 904 and I’m running into a problem. All the manuals I’ve gone through (that I can find online, anyway) don’t feature a band adjustment lever quite like the one on mine. The transmission came out of a ‘73 Duster, but it has a small bore servo which is typical to those older than ‘72. How would I adjust the band? Turning the bolt only depresses the spring. Doing so doesn’t give me the necessary torque to adjust properly. I’m a little stumped. This is my first rebuild. Go easy on me.
Thanks!

In the late 90s, I read in one of the Mopar magazines of the time to forget the inch pound torque and counting turns thing, and simply adjust for 1/4" to 5/16" clearance at the tip of the lever (where it touches the servo piston), while holding the band applied with a big screwdriver. It worked for me for years in several transmissions doing adjustments like that.

To adjust the Low-Reverse band in an A904 transmission, do the following:
  1. Loosen the locknut.
  2. Back out the adjustment screw until there is some play between the band ends and the apply strut.
  3. Turn the adjustment screw in to remove the play until a tightness of 72 inch-pounds is reached. If a suitable torque wrench is not available, turn until snug with a short wrench. Actuate or wiggle the lever while turning to ensure full strut and band seating against the drum.
  4. Back off the adjustment screw 4 turns for 318 or 360, or 3-1/4 turns for 198 or 225.
  5. Actuate the lever to ensure free motion of the band.
  6. Tighten the locknut.
NOTE: The turns out setting is for stock components. If the transmission is modified with a shift kit, or similar, adjust the number of turns as instructed by the kit manufacturer.
For example, the TransGo TF-2 kit setting is 3-1/ 2 turns.
