I’m looking for a flywheel for my 1968 340. It is my understanding that many internally balanced Chrysler engines (318, 340, 383, 440) used the same flywheel (6 bolt, 10.5” clutch, 130 tooth). I see that Rock Auto lists the LUK LFW 215 flywheel for newer Dodge trucks with 318s. One example is the 1980 D 150. I think all 318s are internally balanced? Is there any reason this flywheel would not work on my 340 engine? Thanks.

Probably could work but what is your intended use for the engine/car? If drag racing, clutch dumps, etc are in your future, Id look to a SFI. McLeod makes a nice one.

I think if, you have the right flywheel for the right size clutch disc yes it will work Mopar had different size clutches a 9.5, 10.5 and 11 inch for some reason i think trucks were 11 inch . But yeah verify the clutch disc size for the flywheel and if its a match it should be a go.

318s and steel crank 340s, although both internally balanced, are balanced differently. So it would be wise to have the reciprocating assembly balanced.

Thanks for the replies. I don't foresee any drag racing or clutch dumps, I'm just building a road-trip car that I can run through the gears. I'm converting to a 4 speed from a 727. The engine is together and sound, so I guess I can't really balance it at this point. I do see that some of the trucks are 11" clutch, but some are also listed for 10.5". I was hoping to hear from someone that has used one of the "economical" flywheels from Rockauto that are listed for the later 318 trucks. If these flywheels are compatible, I'm wondering why they don't show up when you search Rockauto for the older cars. Thanks again.
