Lunati cams being phased out?

-
I use and trust Clay Smith Cams and have for 60 years.

They have help us win dozens of Wallys and many
National Records. Plus about a dozen track championships.

They take the time to listen to us and get us the right camshaft
the first time!

Clay Smith is a great company to deal with. Although, I've never understood their thinking. They don't advertise much AT ALL that they do grinds other than Chevy, yet they will do anything. I've never understood that.

If you want the Lunati that were Ultradyne grinds Bullet cams has alot of them. Check the Ultradyne master list they have.

a lot of people don't know that they're not just cams and Mr. Horsepower swag. they run a full service machine shop that offers porting and blueprinting services, cam & crank welding & grinding as well as block repair. and they are always slam full of business.

George who has owned the shop since I wore short pants, is well up in his 80's
and his son in law Chad has had a transplant and not a young guy either.

They have plenty of work. Back in the 60's/70's, George built some of the fastest
Max Wedge Cars in the country (Including helping with my 64 Max Wedge).
Many of the customers have been with them for 60 years or more (Like Me).
George worked on the cam this year in my Aspen 318 Wagon which is currently
the one of the fastest (If NOT the very fastest) N/SA race car in the country.

My solution to the camshaft disaster the last few years is
to buy and accumulate all the good CWC old school cores
that have a generous amount of extra meat left on the lobe
an no damage.

I then can get them reground to whatever profile I want by
a company such as Clay Smith or Oregon. Every time I find them,
I buy the 20 or 30 year old HP Johnson lifters (Not the newer stuff
that are new old stock that I can find. I run VERY extreme and fast
profiles that would destroy a lot of the new stuff (Lots of Spring Pressure)
AND have never lost a camshaft by flattening in well over 60 year.

MY .02 = For What it is Worth!

I get called a Fool by my friends on the site regularly.
However, this has worked for me a lot since
the metallurgy went to Hell the last 7 or 8 years.

My Shop is full of Wallys so this work for me and really
saves a ton of money.

I was told you can still get the Lunati grinds from comp.
I don't believe this for one second. The Lunati grinds were better than Comp by far. Every "XE" Comp Cam I have used were noisy. The Lunati cams were never noisy. The back side of the lobes were different so it didn't slam the valve shut.

i read his reply as comp can grind the lunati profiles for you, not comp profiles are the same as lunati ones.
neil.

If comp is affiliated with the same parent company that comp is, then it’s possible comp could have the lunati profiles.

They are not the same. Google "UDHarold". You will find it was Harold Brookshire. He worked at several different cam companies. He was a great guy and knew his stuff. Comp doesn't have his VooDoo line lobes. They have his XE lobes. There are close but not the same.

Just googled. Lunati is under Edelbrock and Comp is under Industrial Opportunity Partners.

You can get some of the older Brookshire grinds from Bullet.
Probably not the voodoo lobes.

Yep and I doubt Edelbrock is going to use the Voodoo grind. They want to push the stuff they already have ground up. Sadly they bought another company to just close it up.

Lunati is GONE. They'll tell you anything to sell you a cam, but Lunati and any of their grinds are gone. POOF.

Too bad the Voodoo line has vanished. Those Hyd grinds were always nice. For the same rough durations like 268, were always a smidge better than comp XE stuff.

I put a Voodoo in my AMC 401. One of the reasons for my selection was that it was a grind designed for the larger lifter diameter. Comp loves to sell Chevrolet lifter diameter grinds for all engine makes.

Comp has .904 specific grinds.

I had a cam reground for a 360 and chose an ultradyne lobe that was for the .842 lifter.
Just depends.
