Magnum 5.9 vs 5.9 head gasket bores

Hello all, question.


Rockauto head gaskets show different gasket bore sizes for a 5.2 and a 5.9 magnum:

5.2 head gasket bore size: 4.035

5.9 head gasket bore size: 4.180

Why? If the pistons are down in the hole as much as they are from the factory, why are the gaskets not both the same bore size?


Can the 5.2 gasket be run in a 5.9 with no issues, assuming the deck height is set up correctly? What am I missing?

You’re correct, you can use them interchangeably. As long as the deck height doesn’t cause issues you’re good to go. In fact, because the magnums use the same cylinder head regardless of displacement, most manufacturers list them as 5.2/5.9 head gaskets. I use the cometics below on my 5.9.
