I have a 225 slant 6 in my 71 dodge dart, I noticed it had an exhaust leak at the manifold, I then noticed there was a stud missing (broke) and I am wanting to replace all the studs. Is that a good idea with one broke should I just see what happens and try to get away with replacing just the one? I have all new studs for it but everyone I know has said to just replace the 1. I was also told to get a new head for it if it gives me trouble. Could someone give me some advice? thanks

I'm trying to think back to me dealership days, but if I recall, there were only studs in the front and rear of the manifold and all the rest were bolts . Some bolts had thick round washers and some had triangular washers. Any good service center should be able to drill and tap the broken stud when the manifold is removed. Some machine shops will do mobile service as well.

Most any garage you take it to would replace just the broken stud, unless the head had to come off to fix the one. Same with Fords 302 breaking the stud at right rear corner of intake, they fix only whats broken.

thanks. I think I am gonna pull it apart and see what happens. I have a trailer to take it in if I have too. I tried to loosen one of the nuts and the whole stud turned. I guess thats good since it could be stuck. Should I put any thing on the studs when i put the new ones in? Loctite, or Teflon tape? Will the anti freeze come out when i pull those studs? I have heard of that happening. thanks

The studs that turn in the head are definately not into a water jacket or wet hole. Those that are in a wet hole usually break :(
Spray some brand of penetrant on all of them and let it soak a day. Studs that get replaced in wet holes should get a little rtv silicone on the threads.
Note' teflon tape is reserved for tapered pipe threads . Bolt threads are not designed the same and tape shouldn't even fit between male and female .

I didn't think the tape was a good idea but I had read it somewhere so I wanted to ask. thanks

now if I could get this a/c compressor off we would be in biz. thanks again
