Are there any options out there for a manual steering coupler. I am tired of fighting to keep mine together in my 72 dart. I have seen the borgenson ones for power steering but haven't seen anything for manual. Thanks

The best way to assemble the coupling is with the column out of the car, I have never had a problem doing it this way.

Yeah, me too.
But the retainer thingie has to be put on in the car after the roll pin is tapped in between the coupler and the steering box shaft...

If it is done right there is no need for the retainer.

The factory didn't use the retainer, it was made for the service department so they wouldn't need to pull the column.

This is how I did mine on my 65 Dart but I had to buy some bushings because I went from power to a new quick ratio manual and shaft lengths are different and I just modified the shaft, I paid less than $20.00 on eBay for u-joint coupler, go to my build thread "thought I would share 65 dart and I explain what I did because at the time I couldn't find one with a 1" smooth for the shaft side,Tracey

And I installed it with my rebuilt column in the car, your car is not stock anyway, I would get rid of that factory headache and I know I will never have to touch mine again, paint it or clear coat it and done, at least for me and I up graded to a closed bearing at the bottom of the column which I learned about here on FABO

Thanks, I will check your build thread as this is what I had in mind.

Ya I bought a 3/4" 36 spline on one end to go to the steering gear with a 1" 48 spline on the other and took a die grinder and removed the 48 splines to a 1" smooth and it fit perfectly, then drilled and tapped small holes on both ends for set screws maybe 2 set screws ea. Don't know what size your shaft is but I bought a well known brand u-joint AFCO and have seen them recommended on here for other of their products and you probably will find the right one and no grinding as I am sure if I looked now I could probably get a 1" smooth everybody was just out of stock the day I was buying

On the comments about the roll pin needing to be in farther here's what I found. I got the old pin out and it was mushroomed on the top and where it slides between the steering shaft and coupler it had flattened and would not go all the way through. I used the 5/16 punch to try and align the coupler but it hit the shaft also but the 1/4 in punch would go through. I looked through the hole and could see maybe a 1/16th or so of the shaft extending past the coupler hole. So what could be my issue.

I don't think you've got the room with the header tube there for that clunky *** wire clip. Use this. I used one on Vixen and it works fantastic. It's actually not made for the early A coupler, but it works good. I used a couple of black zip ties to clamp it on good. It's designed to fit coupler like what you have.

I seen those but wasn't sure what held them in place. Thanks

Let's just say it's a ***** to get on. Like I said, they're made for your style coupler, not mine. It fits just good enough that you can slide it on by hand. It's shaped a little differently, so when it's installed (on my style coupler), there are some gaps around where the bulges for the shoes meet the main body, so I put two heavy duty black zip ties on it, along with a thin layer of RTV first. It ain't leaked the first bit of grease and it ain't gone anywhere. Give Peter a call and see what he says. He's a great guy to work with. He'll tell you if he thinks you have a better option.

It looks like it would work good, but at 42 bucks they sure ain't giving them away!
My '69 Dart has the clip, and it works great and doesn't hit the Doug's headers.
Oh, and mine is power steering to boot...
