1967 Barracuda ~ 273/235 HP 'Commando'
vs.
1970 Duster ~ 318/230 HP

In 1970 {NHRA} both A-Body cars were classed in 'L/Stock'

Barracuda = #2940 lbs. ~ 235 HP = 12.51 Wt/Hp

Duster = #2915 lbs. ~ 230 HP = 12.68 Wt/Hp

The 'Lil' 273 Rev Monster' vs. 'The Grunt Torker'

Duster. I went from a 273-4 to a 318 with all the 273-4 stuff (cam, heads, intake) and the 318 was faster, even off the line, its almost 18% more motor. Compression difference was none...

1970 ~ {318 / 230 HP}

* 230 HP @ 4400 RPM's
* 320 Ft/Lbs. of Torque @ 2000 RPM's

* Compression Ratio......... 9.3 {Flat Top}
* Piston Depth................. {-.060"}
* Gasket........................... .028"

* Cylinder Head #2843675 {Open Chamber = 60.6 CC}
* 1.78" Intake / 1.50" Exhaust

* Camshaft {Hydraulic}
* .373"/.400" ....Lift
* 240*/240* .....Duration
* 20* ................Overlap

With 40 more ft/lb of torque I'll have to go with the teen. (I can't believe I just said that) LOL

Tool-Man-Mike

Did you have your fingers crossed, and have your hand behind your back
when you said that.

'Stock vs. Stock'

Don't you remember the way those 318's hit the wall at the 1000' Mark, or
at 4000 RPM's.

Valves Floating all over the place...........

From the 1970 Performance Mopar Book

* 1970 Plymouth Duster ~ 318/230 HP {3-Speed Manual Transmission} w/3.23 Gears

* Performance....... 15.91 @ 84.7 MPH

T-M-R,

Had to check some 1970 'Back-in-the-Day' results.

We had a Race Car Club member run a 1970 Duster 318 {3-Speed Stick} with Headers,
7" Slicks and Gears {4.10}, classed in 'L/Stock'.

A few 'minor' performance upgrades, but 'absolutely' no Engine work.

15.30's @ 88 MPH

My 100% stock 318 2bbl (stock exhaust manifolds, 1985 motor, flat tappet not roller) in my B-body (definitely heavier than 2915) with 2.94's and automatic went 15.90's all day. I watched a guy go 15.70's with a 318 2bbl in a '73 dart custom with 2.76 gears and auto. I think there is much more than 15.90's in the duster with that light of a car and 3.23's...... that 4 speed driver must have spun to high heavens.....

Actually,

The 'performance test' was done at Muncie Raceway by Plymouth Techs in October 1969.

* 1970 Duster ~ w/Power Steering
* 318/230 HP ~ 2-Barrel ~ 3-Speed {Manual} ~ 3.23 'Sure-Grip'

Average Elapsed Time was ...... 15.91 @ 84.7 MPH {10 Runs}

The 'lowest' ET was ............... 15.79 @ 86.1 MPH

The 'print' in the article was blurred.

Corrected MPH.

* 1970 Duster ~ w/Power Steering
* 318/230 HP ~ 2-Barrel ~ 4-Speed ~ 3.23 'Sure-Grip'

Average Elapsed Time was ...... 15.91 @ 86.7 MPH {10 Runs}

The 'lowest' ET was ............... 15.79 @ 88.1 MPH
The 88 mph would usually result in a lower 15 second pass, especially with a light car and a 4 speed (meaning quicker 60 ft times). Must have had wheel spin. My 15.90's were at 84 mph consistently. My 60' times were 2.2. The capability to hit 88 mph with a 318 2bbl is actually very impressive!!!

Still, 86 mph is a nice mph on a 318 2bbl..... remember, this would have been single exhaust, and with power steering it would have had the "bad flowing" drivers exhaust manifold. Just dual exhaust and a small 4bbl and you have a poor mans hot rod :D

Back in 66, Motor Trend tested a 66 Dart GT with a Hi po 273 and automatic. It ran in the 18's @ 74mph. tmm

So what were the test result specs for the 67 barracuda, ???????
