I'm back, I just couldn't stay away. LOL

The hunt was successfull again this year. Here's the story.

I arrived at the camp on Tuesday afternoon. I spent the rest of the day and evening making last minute preparations. I managed to drink a few beer (imagine that, me and beer. LOL) that night and prepared to make a dry run at what I was going to do on opening morning. Wednesday came early. I was out of the camp and headed for my moose spot at 5 am. Just before I got there I decided to check another spot close by. What a mistake that was. As I was turning the truck around, I spilled some cold pop on my crotch area. I jumped a little to much and hit the gas at the wrong time and put the truck into a real soft spot. Three hours later I had finally got it jacked high enough to attempt to get it out. A guy in a Chevy came along right then and offered to hook onto me. I swallowed my Dodge pride and accepted. Better safe than sorry. Between us we managed to get it out and I was back on the road. I thanked him for his help and we started talking. He had a moose license as well and had no place to hunt. I offered our spot after we were done and he accepted. My wife and brother and sister in law arrived later that morning. The rest of the day was uneventful until just before dark. I was at my stand and from there I can see the stand my wife and brother in law were going to use. A huge bull came out in front of their stand just before dark so our hopes were high for the next morning.
Thursday morning started at 3:30 am. We were out of the camp and on our way at 4:30am. The weather was not good for moose hunting, very windy and it was to warm. Daybreak came and there were no moose to be seen and it was near impossible to call one in that wind. I got up in my stand and hung on for dear life until 10:00am when it just got to windy to stay in the tree. The stand is 75 feet up a spruce tree and moves around a lot in the wind. I walked through the adjacent cuttings and never crossed a fresh moose track. That was not a good sign. I went back to the truck and brought it the rest of the way in to the stand so I didn't have as far to walk that evening. I then phoned my Brother in law and we talked about going to another spot the next day as he wasn't seeing anything either. We decided to stay put for the rest of the day. I told him I was going to move a little closer to him and look at a cutting that neither of us could see from our stands.
It was 1:15pm and I got out of the truck, grabbed my .270 and started to walk across the cutting. There was a loud crash in a small island of trees to my right and a bull moose came charging out of there galloping like a race horse across the cutting about 150 yards out. I am pretty sure it got my scent and was headed for the hills. I raised the rifle and started shooting. I got off 4 shots and it just disappeared. I walked over to where I had last seen it and there it was, on the ground and not moving. The hunting was over and the work was just starting. I got on the phone with my brother in law and his only question was, "How big is it this year?". I told him not to worry, and he and my wife could come on over.
I'm sorry there are no pics of me in these, but somebody had to take the pics and my brother in law will not take photos. LOL Anyway the pics are of my brother in law as he started to field drees the moose, a look back at where my truck was, I was standing right beside those trees that almost hide the truck when I shot. The last pic is of my beautiful wife whit her third moose. She has now had her license 3 times and we got her moose on opening day each time. A good time was had by all and we all got back safe. I would say that was a successful hunt.

That's allright Rani. I don't look like a coyote either. LOL To answer your question from my going away thread, Yes we do eat them. They the best tasting meat of the deer family and is much better than beef in my eyes anyway. The meat also has very little fat, I have read that it has less fat than skinless chicken.

Possibly.....a .270 is a necked down 30-06....one of the oldest and most popular 'wild cat' rounds ever made.....has decent velocity too.

Awesome hunt Jack,That'll put some meat in the deep freeze. i haven't been on a moose hunt since 91,But i do bow hunt deer and it's close and there's a abundance
of them here.

Here you go Rani. This is a pic of the exact model of rifle I hunt with. It is a Remington 7400. That means it is the semi-auto model. It is a very effecient rifle if used and cared for properly. Mine has a Nikon Monarch 3x9 scope on it and I have two 4 shot clips.
My wife supports my hunting adventures to the fullest. She knows how important that aspect of my life is to me. Not as import as family, but next in line.
The butcher tells me that we will get 359 lbs of meat from this moose. Like I said, this was not a big one. Last years moose, we got 650 lbs of meat.

Our deer season starts in about 3 weeks. The wife would shoot me if I traded for deer meat. She doesn't really care for it. LOL

Wow, I'm impressed / surprised that you hunt Moose with a 270. Nice score though!
The only time I ever had moose meat was in a restaurant (in Finland) but it was really good. I'm envious....

Congratulations Jack Good shooting there bud on the move and a hit (kill shot) and he hit the ground
I just love that picture of your wife in the back of the truck
Creed texted Treve (idon't text)and said Creed just shot his first deer this season up in the hills of Hardy Arkansas and was on the ground tracking it, and about 20 later we got the news that he found it (young doe) so I should be seeing him soon as it is a 2 hour drive and this happened about 8:15 am this morning
His first Deer taken with a compound bow.
Another Moose to hit the freezer this year, and a great time was had it sounds like, except spilling your cold drink sounds like you made a new friend out in the woods..

Another great day in the life of Coyote Jack and his sweet little lady and her brother this year.

I,m watching Mountain Men. Marty just shot a bull about a thousand pounds. Hes in about 20 below weather though. Probably not as much fun as you had.

I need a moose, but my small freezer would not hold it LOL. Congrats Jack.

The biggest we ever got was a 1400 pound 22 pointer back in 2001. My brother shot it on my license. I called it in for him as he had never shot a moose before. It was not -20 or even below freezing though. That would make things a lot tougher.

Congrat's to your father-in-law jd340. I bet he was excited.

Jack

For sure! He has pics of it hoisted up on a big A frame, ready for gutting, I assume. He grew up in Bellefond, near Newcastle. He knows how to live off the land. ;)
