Have you guys read the latest article in the Mopar Collectors Guide on the CAFE standards that, if I'm reading correctly, Obama has already penned?

If the article say what I believe it does, then it's a done deal......unless there is some kind of radical revolt in Washington to stop it......

We've lost virtually ALL of the new muscle cars with the new regulations, and if new emissions standards are in the mix as well, we could also lose OUR HOBBY as we've known it.

I'm writing this in the general section because I believe it has merit for ALL of the members to read and understand.........These new CAFE regulations could very well be the death nell to the cruisin' hobby, effectively making our classics nearly useless (with alluded emissions standards thrown in the pot)........that is, unless it is stopped.........I for one do NOT KNOW how it can be stopped........

What I'm asking here is for any further input or insight from members relative to the ramifications of the new standards (that being a 35 MPG average by the year 2011.......????!!!!!) which would effectively erase from production all of the cars we've just begun to enjoy seeing produced again......

Any comments or greater insight into the article would be appreciated. Anyone else read it? Any comments? (and I don't mean to rail against a politician......I mean, what will this mean to car production (American) and possibly to our hobby? Read the article guys............opinions please. :read2::read2::read2:

Nah, I'm sure the good ol' Chrysler boys still have some tricks up their sleeves to keep our SRT8's going strong into the next decade. And really when you think about it a 35 MPG average just means that they have to make more cars that get more than that to offset the lower MPG cars. Trust me, they'll figure a way out. I'm sure by now they're used to this type of **** and have been planning ahead for it.

Still, it is terrible. I don't get Mopar Collector's Guide so I don't have access to that article but from what I've read it does sound like stupid bulldong. It is pretty scary what's going on and at this point I have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.

In order for Ma Mopar to keep producing ANY of ther SRT's or similar cars, they have to come up with others that put out 55 MPG............by 2011.........

There's nothing i the works that I know of.........unless they've discovered anti-gravity or something.............

This could halt every "muscle car" advance we've seen, and bring an end to the American Muscle Car..........

I don't know if I'm more concerned about this, or about possible emissions standards being made retroactive and covering classic cars........You know how some of these liberal states operate........they're on the "green" bandwagon.......... :read2::read2::read2:

I think if they try to cover classic cars, they'll have a huge fight on their hands. "Give me liberty or give me death!" lol

I'd like to say the same thing too........BUT, all of the legislation they're shoving down the throats of the American people is generally UNREAD by the legislators themselves!! These things are being decided behind closed doors and in secret sessions, then being rammed through for quick votes without any debate!

How in the name of American culture and the American dream can you fight such people ??????

TELL ME HERE, CAUSE I REALLY WANT TO KNOW !!

WHAT organizations are our BEST defenses against this onslaught ? If something isn't done at the grass roots level to make our collective voices heard, and LOUD, we're in for BIG losses to the hobby in general, and to the overall American Car Culture. :angry7:

Hopefully, there will be a grandfather clause in the bill if it is passed. I really can't see them knowingly rendering thousands (or millions?) of cars unusable.

Pure fear mongering BS.

What makes you think there's still going to be a Chrysler by 2011 anyways?

LOL!

Chrysler is set to release its Phoenix V-6 and V-8 engines within the next couple years, as well as the small Cummins Diesel V-8 in the lighter-duty Ram trucks and SUV's. Don't forget either the recent "merger" with Fiat which should bring in a whole bunch of tiny fuel-efficient cars for Chrysler to use.

Did you read the article? If you haven't read it, spare me.

And you're a little double-minded there bub........In one breath you call it fear mongering BS, and then you imply that Chrysler is doomed anyway. Which way do you want it?

If you're gonna reply, at least make some sense.

I sure hope there is a grandfather clause in there some where Tom
I have not seen the article yet and It seem's to me that NHRA, NASCAR and
all the hobbyist will jump in and have a say on this.:read2: If we get hit they will too.
I hope that if you have a car that don't pass we will be restricted to just how much we can drive them.
If I am understanding you right.
This is not good news, and thank you for the heads up.
I will be looking for some info myself and see what I can find.

The more research I do the more I don't buy this climate change theory. I think its a big world welfare scam to bring the Kyoto accord to fruition and syphon wealth from the G8 to the third world. You tell me how China is a developing nation when they invented gun powder while western culture was just out of the bronze age. Their history goes back thousands of years yet we will have to pay them to keep our industries going under the cap and trade system? How is that going to reduce pollution? Its just going to redistribute wealth so we can pollute. I'm cool with reducing emissions for the sake of our health but not cool with sending billions of tax dollars to China and India where all are jobs are getting out sourced to. If anyone is interested in some well founded research that rebuts good old Al (the great carnak) Gore check this website out.

It's all a socialist scam!

on a side note all together has anyone givin any thought to the fact that so much ridacule is being placed on unnecessary corporate spending and travel that it threatens any corporate sponsership of events. in essence if all corporate sponcers decided to pull out of events then auto racing in any form or fashion, as well as other sponsered type events are threatened to lose all of the money flow. couple this with the also threatened travel industry. unnessary travel and hotel stays being a no- no now. where does that leave us???

Guys, has anyone else read the article yet?

This CAFE regulation is big stuff.......BIG........I've read and re-read to be sure I'm gettin' the substance of what they're saying........

If I'm reading it correctly, it definitely spells the end of the new muscle car era..........unless, again, they come up with some INCREDIBLE gas mileage vehicles to offset the gas guzzling muscle averages........it's all in the averages.........

I've heard it said that perhaps Fiat has some tricks up it's sleeve.......Is this Fiat thing even a done deal? What's in the pipeline that could save Ma Mopar from complete destruction at the hands of these new regulations?

I read it and it says Obama wants 35 mpg CAFE by 2011. The issue is thats an unreasonable goal for auto companies to meet in that time frame especially in this economic mess we are in. Even members of Obama's cabinet are against it. The article made it sound like it was a done deal. Lets hope not.

Yeah.....the way it reads is that it's already a done deal.........????????

I completely missed it if so........and WHY have we not heard more about it from the manufacturers?? They've sure been getting enough press to shout about it.

You talk about a solid kick to a beaten body..............

Sounds to me like Obama is a JFK wannabee. Remember "put a man on the moon by the end of the decade?"

One of the reasons I cancelled my sub to Mopar Collectors Guide was the political stuff they put in it.

Having said that if you want to read something real interesting (This is no Bull the guy was a Cornell professor and also consulted by NASA because of his work.) read "The Deep Hot Biosphere" by Thomas Gold. This whole running out of oil bit is Bull&%#$. It's based on a theory the oil companies have perpetuated since the 18 hundreds.

This isn't some conspiracy theory; unlike the common held believe that oil is from dinosaurs Gold's and other studies are based on scientific fact.

One of the reasons I cancelled my sub to Mopar Collectors Guide was the political stuff they put in it.

I am on my "3 issues free" deal MCG handed out to ex-subscribers over on moparts. And I like the political stuff and the half dressed women too.

I don't believe they could make it retroactive, it should apply only to the cars being built, you can't just say all you folks with cars that don't get 35 mpg you need to get scrap them. Time will tell but to implemement it straight across the board to all cars on the road would be pretty much impossible in my humble opinion :read2:

The older cars won't be retroactive to a 35 MPG regulation........but the regulations open up the floodgate for the Feds and individual states to pass further emissions regulations........that's where they'd get the classics.......we'd have to pass or get off the highway.........

....and they can do anything thay want, any time they want to.......THAT'S the biggest problem facing our hobby........These greencoats are hell bent on saving this planet by erasing nearly all American car culture and fossil fuel use.

As far as the political crap in Mopar Collectors, if it has to do with the auto industry and our hobby, WHY WOULD YOU NOT WANT TO KNOW ?

Pastortom, what's the deal on your new avitar? Is that yours, me likes it :-D

Lots of comments here and questions about where to turn for action. Anybody here belong to the SEMA Action Network (www.semasan.com)? if you don't, you need to.
Take a look at their website: "The SEMA Action Network is a nationwide partnership of car clubs, and individual enthusiasts (like you) who work together to impact legislation that affects car and truck hobbyists of all kinds. By joining the SAN you will receive up-to-date alerts on hobby-related legislation in your state and across the country. Best of all – it’s free.".
You can keep up to date on what's happening in all states and the federal level as well. They also post of list of your state and federal legislators who support our hobby as well as instructions on how to contact your legislators so you can let them know how you feel.
Take a look and take part - it's more important now than ever before!!!

MCG's editor is a blowhard. I also let my subscription lapse--not because of the political stuff per se, but because he gets up on his soapbox and rants without researching his facts.

Just because Obama WANTS cars to average 35 mpg doesn't make it so, ESPECIALLY with U.S. automakers already on the ropes. There would be no quicker way to put the entire U.S. auto industry out of business. I don't have any great love for the current congress, but NO WAY would they pass legislation right now that would be so harmful to the economy.

Ever hear of the SEMA Action Network (SAN)? This is a SEMA-run political watchdog group that follows anti-auto legislation and spearheads telephone, mail and email writing campaigns to legislators to voice the collector car hobby's opinions. I receive SAN alerts every time there is a state or national bill that would negatively effect the car hobby. EVERYONE with a passion for collector cars should join. There's no charge, and it could save our hobby.
