i just bought a 34 plymouth 4 door sedan and want to install
a newer small block engine and transmission. i want decent power
and decent gas mileage. what do you recommend?

I would go with a 318, lots of cores around, not expensive to get your hands on one. Maybe a 904 transmission. Again readily available. Probably less $$$ than buying a 727. (let see some pics of that '34 :))

Thanks for the info on my 34 plymouth. I'll send some photos as soon as i figure out how to do it on this site.

Does this ride have the original motor and power train?
This car will be worth a lot more money with the original engine and power train.
Flat heads are simple to rebuild.

Keep this in the back of your head, 30's plymouths are pretty rare.

If you go V8 you will need to build a complete chassis to handle the power, I would start with a modern truck frame.

And yes to the above posts 318 will make a smooth cruiser.
Look into dakota trucks, the frames fit older bodys decent if you are good at fabricating.

The 318 can be built to get some great mileage and have great power too. There are only a few ways a 360 can do it. Fuel injection and overdrive transmissions, which are expensive.....unless you find an A833 overdrive and even they are getting expensive. A thermoquad carburetor can help a 360 get good mileage, but you need to have a good bit of experience tuning them. My recipe would be 318, A500 trans if it'll fit and a 4.10 gear. Even with the 4.10 the final drive ratio will be well under 3:1.
