Wha would you do with 16k?

-
Well, some of the 16k could always be put back for a rainy day. I'm a firm believe in not spending every dime I have even when things are going good.

Yeah, your opinion is noted. My comments were directed straight at you since it is the high and strict standards that you have that do exclude many people from getting what they need.
Not everyone cares to have a car look better than new. Some just want their car to be one color, reasonably shiny and presentable.
I see driver quality cars at shows and out in public. I don't insult them for their cars not being perfect, I applaud them for being out driving and enjoying it.
The high and strict standards are for anything I'm going to paint. I see plenty of cars with driver quality paint jobs and I am glad to see them out and about also. Trust me, I'm not the world's greatest painter but, I will do my very best everytime. I'm saying if you want a job that is going to last and, look very very presentable it takes lots of labor hours and good materials and, that costs a lot of money.

A less expensive paint job can be had but, it may not last as long and look as good. I painted this car this spring for a friend of mine with very inexpensive materials that he supplied. It can be done if you have good technique. It was more labor hours to make it look nice with less expensive materials and who knows how long it will last but, it can be done....I choose not to do it because, it's my name on the paint job.

Sold my jeep and have 16k to put into my 73 dart. It has a 360 and a 904 transmission. But…it’s really not very powerful. Sounds good and looks good but I really want some decent power. What engine and transmission would you put in it? I’d really love a manual transmission. Maybe just wake it up a bit?

holy crap did this thread go off the rails. maybe we should get back to the original question the kid has...

I've heard the "its my name" thing with paint and body but where does that lead? you having a line pf people wanting to pay top dollar for work that will take you forever to finish? I just never got the Picasso attitude with car painters. If you are that good start a business and train someone or two to paint like you do so you can keep up with your high dollar work orders.

My question would be, what is your intended purpose for the car, or your end goal. My Duster I pretty much daily drive, it has a very mild 360 but, runs good and is super reliable. It gets about the same mpg as my truck. My Challenger on the other hand is kinda rowdy, pretty reliable but, gets 6 mpg. To me it comes down to what you plan to do with the car. The more ya build the power the less just turn key they become generally. Oh and sorry for hijacking your thread with paint talk..

Yeah they are meant to be driven, a cheap or so so paint job that is going to get stone chips works for some people there is no point in making these cars overly expensive now no one is going to buy them when you go to sell. A 30 year old now isn't buying these cars at 50 they simply aren't interested in cars boomers bought new. Now an exception? maybe they'll buy a Dukes Charger or Smokey trans am or Starsky Torino some movie car but that's about it IMO. Maybe Toretto's charger from fast n Furious etc. some specialty car yeah I can see that. Another variation is yeah you can say theyll know what a cool car is sure but will they pay 50k for a 340 Swinger? I've seen those prices asked but did anyone ever pay that for a dart ? I dunno. also I'm not sure its a hijack paint is expensive especially when you pay someone else to do it. did you know alot of these guys take your car and hand you a bill every month and if you don't pay it they push your car outside and let it get rained on? not good for a car in primer...

This was painted 30 years ago, with acrylic enamel (what most classify as cheap paint) Nothing wrong with cheap paint as long as the prep is good...

55 year old lacquer paint.

no doubt that just about any paint can look great, fact is though that the modern base/clear definatley hold up better when out in the elements more then they are garaged..
