Plymouth Savoy ~ 413/420 HP...................................... Biscayne ~ 409/409 HP

1962 Dodge Lancer 'GT' ~ 225/195 HP
vs.
1962 Chevrolet Biscayne ~ 283/170 HP

No Contest,

The #2560 lb. 'Lancer GT' Hardtop with the 6-Cylinder 'Hyper-Pak' smokes the #3425 lb. Bel Air 'Hardtop' V-8.

The 1962 'Lancer GT' with the Hyper-Pak was the 'fastest' Compact in 1962.

How well did we do against the Chevy 454's and the Ford 460's? That's what I wanna know.
Don't know all the years of the other guys cars with those motors...

One thing no one has brought on these comparisons, say for example-
-The 'fuel injected stingray & the 413' -the 413 had problems or something-
The ole timers could point out what was found broken down on the road despite how great the stats looked on paper.

-Say for example thru my limited scope, I think it was a 90's Chevy truck that came with a 454. One of the rich kids at my school blew his piston thru his hood on the highway with hard acceleration, rapid braking/de-acceleration, and another stomp on the gas.

1962

'Sport Fury' ~ 383/343 HP 'Dual-Quad' 'Automatic'
vs.
Impala SS ~ 409/380 HP '4-Speed'

Heads Up, the 'Sport Fury' by a 'nose length'.

Both could run low 13.00's @ 109 MPH back in 1962.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dodge Model #440 ~ 361/305 HP 'Automatic'
vs.
Biscayne ~ 327/300 HP '4-Speed'

The Model #440 runs all over the Biscayne.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Polara ~ 318/260 HP '3-Speed'
vs.
Impala ~ 327/250 HP '4-Speed'

The Impala by a solid car-length plus.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dart ~ 413/410 HP 'Automatic'
vs.
Bel Air ~ 409/409 HP '4-Speed'

The Bel Air edges the Dart by a tight car-length.

This thread has the potential to go nuts if you keep it going thru all the muscle car years...:D

Mopar vs. Chevrolet ~ Year to Year ~ Nemesis vs. Nemesis

1962

Plymouth Valiant ~ 6-Cylinder 170/101 HP........................ Chevy II ~ 4-Cylinder 153/100 HP

This one kills me...lol. Not sure about the Valiant, but the 4cyl Deuce is a 20sec car at best.

Dodge Lancer ~ 6-Cylinder 225/145 HP............................ Chevy II ~ 6-Cylinder 194/120 HP

I inherited a 63' II, PG equipped car, and bought a 63' 3spd stick for $50. The auto car did hang with a 73' Nova 250-6. High 18's at best.....:D.

Plymouth Sport Fury ~ 383/343 HP 'Dual-Quad'............... Impala SS ~ 409/340 HP

Close I would think.....the 340 horse 409 was really built for a PG equipped passenger car.

Dodge Dart ~ 413/410 HP............................................. Bel Air ~ 409/409 HP

This ^^^^^^^^^^^ would be fun...

Plymouth Belvedere ~ 413/410 HP................................. Corvette ~ 327/340 HP

Dodge Model #330 ~ 413/420 HP.................................. Corvette ~ 327/360 HP 'Fuel Injection'

The actual quarter mile numbers may skew to the 413 vs the Vette. The 413 cars were really fast, but the light Vette with someone that knew how to drive a stick, could produce a lot of wins on the "street".

Plymouth Savoy ~ 413/420 HP...................................... Biscayne ~ 409/409 HP

I love the Savoy here [quote]

Thanks Paul.
I love where this thread is going.....especially if you keep on all the way thru with the Muscle car years. Should make for some crazy debate.....:D.

Agreed... this is gonna get good.... Love that 62 Impala,my favorite body style. Anymore,I prefer pure stock drags/mild street machines ,running heads up.

1962 NHRA Classes

The 1962 'Impala SS' ~ 409/380 HP was classed in {A/S}. The 409/380 HP was a '4-Speed Only' engine.

* #3622 LBS. {Shipping Weight} ~ #3790 lbs. {Curb Weight}

* Compression Ratio............ 11.0-1
* Cylinder Heads #3814690.. 2.19" Intake ~ 1.72" Exhaust
* Solid Lifter Camshaft........ .498/.464" Lift ~ 322*/320* {Optional Factory Camshaft}
* Intake Manifold................ Aluminum Dual-Plane High Riser
* Carburetor...................... Carter AFB 750 CFM {1 11/16" x 1 11/16"}
* Exhaust.......................... 2 1/2" System
* Gears............................. 4.56 Posi-Traction {Factory Option}
* Borg-Warner................... T-10 Close-Ratio {2.20 / 1.64 / 1.21 / 1.00}

* 380 HP @ 5800 RPM's
* 420 Ft/Lbs. of Torque @ 3200 RPM's.

Overview
The 1962 Impala SS 409/380 HP was feared on the 'Streets', especially with 4.56 Gears and the 'Optional Camshaft'.

A High-Compression engine, with the biggest Carter AFB carburetor, a High-Lift/Long-Duration Mechanical Camshaft,
combined with a Free-flowing Exhaust system and High-Rise Intake, this Chevrolet combination was a winner nearly all
of the time.

With a Close-Ratio T-10 Transmission and 4.56 Gears, this #3622 lb. 'Mid-to-Big Body' big-block was surprisingly
quick off the line. And once the 409 hit 4000 RPM's, it pulled like a Freight Train and could scream up to 6000 RPM's.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 1962 'Sport Fury' ~ 383/343 HP was classed in {S/S or S/SA}

The Sport Fury was #370 lbs. lighter.

62' Corvette ~ 327/340 HP ~ 4-Speed ~ 4.56 Gears

* Shipping Weight.......... #2925 lbs.
* Compression-Ratio....... 11.25-1 ~ 'Dome Pistons'
* #461 Cylinder Heads.... 1.94" Intake ~ 1.50 Exhaust" {172 CC Intake Ports / 62 CC Exhaust Ports}
* Camshaft 'Mechanical'.. .395"/.401" Lift ~ 287*/287* Duration ~ 110* Overlap
* Intake Manifold............ Aluminum Dual-Plane High Riser
* Carburetor................... Carter AFB '625 CFM' {1 7/16" x 1 9/16"}
* Transmission................ T-10 {Close-Ratio}
* Gears.......................... 4.56

A 'lightweight' Sports Car screamer. With only some 'minor tweaking', was capable of 13.30's @ 107 MPH right off the showroom floor.

* versus *

62' Belvedere ~ 413/410 HP

Do we have a 4 speed to 4 speed impala vs Dart?
(auto to auto might be even better)

I'm not a big bubble top fan, but my first car was almost a 62 impala "regular top" with a "late model" 350 and 4 speed.
(I'd still buy it if it turned up tomorrow)

I've driven about half a dozen Muncie cars (including corvettes) and perhaps slightly more 833 cars, and I have to say...the 833 shifts like butter in comparison. Seems like the Muncie shifter doesn't even want to move in a straight line!!?

The best manual trans (pre 90's) gm I ever drove was a 1 ton 68-ish chevy flatbed...
...with an NP435!!!

YY,

In 1962, the Dart {Model #440} 413/410 HP was usually found with the Borg-Warner
Heavy-Duty 'T-85' 3-Speed Manual for the 'shifting types'.

The Borg-Warner T-10 '4-Speed' would not hold up under the Torque of the 426 'Super/Stock'
or 'Ramcharger' engine.

The T-85 with {2.10 '1st-Gear' ~ 1.45 '2nd-Gear' ~ 1.00 '3rd-Gear'} was not the choice of
Drag Racers at the Strip, but the T-85 did hold up.

Dart 'Model 440' ~ 413/410 HP 'Ramcharger'

* #3335 lbs. {Shipping Weight} ~ #3510 lbs. {Curb Weight}

* Compression Ratio ........... 11.0-1 {Dome Piston}
* Camshaft 'Mechanical'....... .509" Lift ~ 300* Duration

Overview;

The 'street version' of the 1962 Dodge ~ 413 {410 HP} with a Manual Transmission could lay down 12.90's @ 110 MPH
pretty much right out of the Dealership.

The Dart 'Model 440' with a Manual Transmission had little trouble with the Impala 409/380 HP '4-Speed' on the Street
or the Strip.

But the Impala SS with the 409/409 HP '4-Speed', now that was a different story.

In my next life :D, with some actual discretionary funds available, i want this car with a stock stroke/stock looking 440+6, 833, and a Dana 4.56. Fun beyond belief.......
