I bought the car to October‘s ago and have dealt with these gremlins since I bought it. My turn signals weren’t working they weren’t blinking I should say and my hazard lights were acting strange. I thought I fixed some of them when I rebuilt the steering column last winter, and put in a new signal and hazard harness assembly. It only fixed half of one problem and created another. So after the new harness and steering column were installed my hazard lights were flashing without the hazard switch being activated but only the rear lights were flashing if I activated the hazard switch it made no difference.
Fast forward to this winter, after installing my 69 Valiant grill and wiring in the new parking lights I decided to tackle the problem again. which meant that I had to drop the steering column & partially disassemble it so I could put in another signal & hazard harness that was specific to a 1970. The old harness that was new was one of the generic 70-76 harnesses, but for some reason just was not compatible with my 70. So after a couple hours of snaking the old harness out in the new one in & hooking everything up temporarily my hazard lights are now working as advertised! But my turn signals are still not blinking so back to crawling under the dash and looking for the flasher unit for the signals. I know the flasher unit for the hazards was right above or near the fuse panel, and I found out that they flasher unit for the signals was somewhere over between the glove box and the ashtray. Located the flasher unit and replaced it with a new one…… but still no flashy flashy on the turn signals I was rummaging around and I pulled the harness down that the flasher unit was attached to and low and behold a factory what looks like to me in-line fuse adapter pigtail that plugs in where the flasher unit would plug-in and then the flasher unit plugs in to the in-line fuse pigtail. Lo and behold the fuse was blown inside the fuse holder, so I installed a new fuse and voilà I have turn signals that flash amazing!!
Have any of you long time a body gurus ever come across a pigtail with an in-line fuse that looks like this? And finally I decided to wire in a set of fender mounted indicator lights so I could tell when my turn signals were on. since my autometer dash panel that I wired up and put together myself did not have provisions for turn signal indicators. Everything worked out pretty well. And it’s nice to finally kick a gremlin out of my garage. now I’m waiting for the next one to pop up,
hopefully not anytime soon.
