Heat crossovers welded

The floor of the intake removed and an aluminum plate installed, in effect , making it "an air gap" manifold.

Im thinking that I haven't quite seen anything else like it from the early 70's

I don't understand why the nipple from the intake to the water pump was welded shut ? Can't be for weight savings????

@SS Lancer Nipple welded shut for thermostat bypass because wasn't being used with a T-stat. Thermostat bypass short circuits hot coolant back into the pump and block.
