Best way to visually id cone or clutch type posi?
Need a quick answer!!!!

easy. you are talking 8 3/4 Differential, right?
X cast into the side of the housing...... 741 housing....cone-style, IF equipped
9 cast into the side of the housing......489 housing....cone-style, IF equipped
2 cast into the side.......742 housing.......CLUTCH-Type, IF equipped.

Clutch type will have bolts holding it together, while the cone does not.

All my 489s have clutch type unit in them just saying. Also a 741 could have either type from the factory.

They both have bolts holding them together. Cone type have the bolts on the ring gear side while the clutch type have bolts on the opposite side.
