What is the easiest method to remove and replace a power steering gear box. It was just replaced about three months ago and the rebuilt one is crapping out. It has about 1/4-1/2 inch of runout in the worm gear and about an 1/8 turn of play in the steering wheel. When it was done the shop dropped the k-frame to do it and they did a bunch of stuff, proped up the engine, loosen the torsion bars, etc., that I didn't think was necessary but to be honest I haven't got a clue how this is suppose to be done. I don't want to approach this for the second time and not have a clue as to how it should be done. Could you guys clue me on the easier way?

Thanks to all of you.

All you should need to do is unbolt it from the K frame and unhook the the lines or take the belt off and remove the pully too. Then there is the pot cupeling that hooks the gear box to the steering shaft. There is a pin that goes through the pot cupeling and holds the guts from cuming out of it. If you push that pin out, the steering shaft will come out of the pot cupeling. That should do it I think.

have you looked at the adjusting screw if it has more adjustment left??? check it out may help for awhile

Thanks for the information it is all helpful. I just can't see why removing the gearbox would require lowering the k-frame. Perhaps I can find a repair manual. The shop that did the work is going to re-do the job but it took them quite a while and that should have been my clue that maybe I was at the wrong place. Like the old saying goes, "If you want something done right then do it yourself." I have had to re-do so many farmed out projects that I should know better by now.
