what would it take to put my 70 dart in the mid 12 range with mileage above 15 per gallon

318, 340, 360, 383, 400, TQ and 3.23 gears or lower numerically. A 273 at that level will get you up around 20 mpg but it is not as easy or nice as the larger motors.

Dude... How many times are you going to ask this?
Many many times probably im trying to weigh out every option i can before i setup my build if youve got a problem with someone asking for help then thats you... no need to be a jerk to someone just asking for advice.. Ever think about that?

Here's the deal; Pick one; 15 mpg or in the 12s. Trying to do both with a small block is an exercise in frustration.
Going 400 plus cubes gets you a better chance, but the trend is to to go overkill right out of the gate and gone is economy.
Like who builds a 12 second car and cares about mileage.

You wanna go 12s its about $2000, just about any old 360-4spd will get you there with a 4bbl and 4.56s
You want 15mpg its about $200. Any old teener-904 with 2.76s will do it with a decent tune-up.
You want both, you need about $15000Plus US bucks.
4000 for the engine,1000 for support works,3500 for the 5-speed, 2500 for a rear that hooks with the right gears and tires,2000 for suspension, steering,BRAKES, and front tires, 1000 for exhaust, and throw in 1000 for miscellaneous.
I think that's even not enough.

use a stock bottom end 440 with closed chamber heads 509/292 cam 3.23 gears and if you want to go low 11s high 10s just add big shot nos don't forget to use good piston rings

not sure but maybe a modern Hemi and

..just wonderin' how the op ended up shooting for mid 12's?
are his buddies hitting those times?

Yeah I bought mine when they were $2500, back in about 2004. What are they up to now? I bet you can buy a lifetime of gas in one of these weekend bombers.

KO
I meant what I said, in a good way. There was no lol attached. That's a heck of a tune.

I'm guessing more BS postings so the above is a you're welcome! I can see who is the "ignored" content... LOL

Simple build 68-71 longblock 340, 214/224 cam, LD340, headers, 3.55's and 26" tires. Car ran 13.30 at 102. Still had a soft 60'. It's not that much of a step to get another 1/2 second off it. I helped on a demon with a 360, xe268H and same other parts as the 340, ran 105 with a rich tuneup, not full throttle until 60' mark at least and too tight converter! That's easy mid 12's MPH and it got 20mpg on the highway.

The key, it MUST 60' well. That is what ET is all about. A great converter can and will make an auto car go without other bad side effects.
