I was calling around looking for a 42rh trans and couldn't find one. can anyone help me on what years I should be looking for and out of what vehicles. I has someone tell me from a junk yard that it wont fit my 340. guy was kind of a dick about it when I was explaining to him its a 904 casing basically. just newer and updated.

What you are looking for will be easier to find if you tell them 42RH or 44RH. Look in 3.9L V6 Dakotas and Ram 2wd trucks, 44RH in 5.2L Dakota and Ram. the RH version is in pre OBD II vehicles so 95 and older. If you find one in Grand Cherokee or 4x4 Dak/Ram you can have tail/OD housing swapped along with output shaft to convert to 2wd. Its pretty easy and not too expensive at trans shop. We have had lots of Wrangler swap customers convert 2wd to 4wd for under $200 by competent shop.

I have posted two pics to help your identification process easier. First pic is of a 44RE plug and trans. You cant use this one without the magnum pcm to run trans, its OBD II 96+. i dont have a pic of RH as we dont use them much. The second pic is of the pcm connectors so you can tell the difference between OBD I and OBD II. The single plug pcm is 95 and older OBD I and the three plugs are the OBD II pcm plugs. So if you are looking at vehicles, first thing tio check is pcm plug. One plug, bingo, three plugs, keep looking.

If you have any more questions pm me or call the shop at 541-955--0363 9-6 Pacific time. Good luck, Evan

Almost forgot, RH has small 3 wire flat plug going into trans straight down, not to be confused with p/n safety switch which is on side of trans at pan level. If I can find an early harness trans plug, I will post pic.

Also, from what I've been able to find, I hope this is correct, if you are willing to go MVB, it doesn't matter if it's RH (hydraulic) or RE (electronic)

that's the difference between the 42RH and 44RH

Evidently the 44 is a bit heavier duty than the 42. "I would assume" that with the right parts you can build a 42 as heavy as a 44

There might be some info in the ATSG manuals Sometime ago I discovered this site, you can download a bunch of 'em if you can figure out the site

See if this download works........it seems to be the 42RH ATSG manual!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found a trans out of a 91 Dakota. is there really any difference between a 91 and 93? I'm assuming there isn't.

From what I know, if they are 3 pin plug, they are the same, V8 should be the same.

We dont use 42 RE but not to say it cant be build strong, just how much will it cost to do so.

I replaced my 46RH in my 1994 ram 250 conversion van that went bad with a 42RH from a 1989 ram 1500 van. Both had 5.2 engines but my engine has crank ignition on the back of the block, so i had to notch the top of the bell housing to clear the crank sensor, i used a kack saw. The 42RH converter bolted right to my crank trigger type round flex plate (i didn't know that till i tried). The 42RH tranny lines are smaller type. but i use the rubber tranny hose to join them to my lines. check out (ete reman.com 42RH) for some info on this tranny, also its a 4 speed automatic with tail shaft like the 46RH and 3 prong. plug in for the lock up converter. hope this helps.-Jimmy
