On my turn signal mechanism, the little tab that keeps the lever in the right turn position has broken off. I saw on ebay i can get a new turn signal with wires for $53 or i can get just that piece that holds the lever in left/right turn. how hard is it to get that piece off and install a new one?

If was me... lol.... I'd get the whole signal if I'm understanding you correctly. I've had all of it out before and put it back in... no problem. It was on a 68 Charger. The right turn signal would not blink and I traced it down to the turn signal cam. It was dirty and I cleaned the terminals and it worked. But what you have is a different problem ... the plastic is broke so replacing might be best.

if its the c shaped piece its no big deal to change. i,d rather have wiring by ma than china. i think you,d be fine with the cancelling piece.

The part Mullinax95 referenced is most likely what you need. You can also get that part at NAPA.

Remove the long machine screw where it pivots - the turn signal lever will come off. Pop the cam off. There will be a couple of wires to splice. Might be easier to disconnect the column harness, remove the 3 screws and retainer that hold the switch in, and pull it part way out to do the job.
