Need help. Heater vent hoses

I ordered a set of hoses in from year one, how do these hook up?
Where do the rings go and why don't the hoses fit to the vents?

Photos would help, plus the year and model of your car. All the A-bodies I know of have duct hoses with different sized ends, which makes a pain getting replacements. I buy regular duct and shim w/ bushings, since can't afford Year One stuff.
