ok, i need help with decoding a cowl tag on a 69 chebbie chevelle.

anyone know how to tell if it is a real b.b 4 speed 396 car?

it is monaco orange, and cowl tag says "72" for it.
how to tell if real 4 speed?

someone help me out!

here is some pics. guy had it in a barn, but just lost the propety due to economy, and now it is sitting outside on the ground for last month

i know he has title and all for it, and i think i can it for dirt cheap, so i figured i would ask!
it does not have origional engine or trans, but comes with a early 454 and four speed in running condition.

he also had new metal hood, full quarters, floor and trunk for it. it has disc brakes up front, and the frame is is primered and ready to be painted

If it has the original drive train with it and is complete and a real SS even in the shape it is in it would probably bring 3-5K, maybe more. Caint see the fender tag too well.

If you can get it dirt cheap then buy it no matter what.It looks like a major project but fairly solid.Lot of Chevelle people around.

here is the vin 136379a309113
tag is: st 69 13637 atl151837
tr 755 72 72
11b pn

VIN:
136379A309113
Year: 1969
Series: Chevelle
Assembly Plant: Atlanta, GA
Serial Number: 309113

If you can get a good shot of the tag, I can decode that too. I have to see what numbers are under what....sorta like a Mopar.

Here's the rest. I figured it out.

Style:
6913637

Year: 1969
Series: Malibu
Body Style: 2-Dr Sport Coupe
Engine: 8 Cyl

Body:
ATL151837

Serial #: 151837

Trim:
755

Series: Malibu
Interior Color: Black
Material: Vinyl Cloth Leather

Paint:
7272

Lower Body Color: Hugger Orange
Upper Body Color: Hugger Orange

Since the SS396 was relegated to an option and stopped being a separate series there is nothing on the Fisher Body Number plate nor the VIN to indicate the car was born with the Z25 SS396 option with one exception. Two exterior paint colors coded "72" for Monaco Orange and "76" for Daytona Yellow were paint choices ONLY when the SS396 option was ordered. These two colors were certainly available on other 1969 Chevelles but did require option ZP3, special paint, to be ordered. When this was done, the trim tag would not show the "72" or "76" paint code but rather would show a dash character (-) in the appropriate lower or upper paint code position.

The only way to truly document a 1969 Chevelle as having the SS396 option, aside from the two paint codes mentioned above, is with some sort of paperwork showing the option itself or the engine suffix code and the car's VIN. Examples would be the build sheet, Chassis Broadcast Copy sheet, warranty card protect-o-plate, or an original factory stamped engine where the partial VIN stamping is a match to the car's VIN.

Hope it helps.

it does have the 72 72 paint code, and i was just reading another site where that in itself does prove it to be a true 396 ss car.

now, how do you prove to be a 4 speed car? lol

It is my understanding that if it has the actual "72" or "76" paint code then it is a 396 car. You could order those colors but the paint code would be represented with a dash. I have no clue how to determine the originality of the 4sp. I know very little about chevy's.

In todays market it is hard to have a good estimate on what anything is worth. If you can buy it cheap then you should be able to make some bank on it but the market will set the price.

In Cali,a roller Chevelle goes for a min of 2 to 3 k.A collector paid 4 to 5 k for a 68 ss bb/4spd complete but rough(numbers matching) 2 yrs ago.

Both Hugger Orange and Daytona Yellow could be ordered on any non-SS Chevelle but the trim tag would reflect the paint code section with either a blank area, dash character ( - ) or the DuPont mixing formula depending on the particular assembly plant's standard operating procedure. A vinyl of convertible top color would be noted with the appropriate letter if applicable just as a normal color selection would be. Special order paint had to be approved by the Fleet & Special Order section of Chevrolet. Special order paint could be any color available by any automotive paint manufacturer except Cadillac Firemist colors due to the coarseness of the metallic in the paint and, supposedly, Corvette exclusive colors.

^^^^^ right, i understand that. if it had been ordered with orange, it would not show 72 72 on the tag.

since it does say 72 72, and no mix formula, od any other, then it was not special ordered, making it a true ss.......?

the emblem are missing on the fenders. but the grille and the tailpanel emblems both say ss 396

Plot;
Can not tell from the photos how much of the interior is still there. Has anyone looked for a build sheet. Typical spots above the glove box, bottom of back seat, under carpet. I checked a couple of Chevelle sites and look through their lost/found build sheet sections but nothing with that vin. Might be worth giving the body a quick once over for it.

I like the Chevelle's but like I tell a friend that has one.
I think they still make them in Mexico because you see
so many of them.

original paint and badging and a factory 4 speed hump i would say its the real deal!! like said earlier 3-5k car with the motor and trans..jmho

Another GM location for the build sheet is on top of the gas tank. Yeah. Stupid.

I will forward a link to my bro Jerry and see what he says. He restored one, a 69 I think...

im sure that the code for SS chevelles is :138" . 136 code is a plain Malibu. just my knowledge with these cars. be carefull with the #s. mike.

cudacrazy, yes in 68 138 would say it is a real 396 car, but in 69, it changed to where the ss is an option under malibu

I bought my running, driving 69 SS 396 375 4 speed chevelle with 4.11 posi for $500 and sold it a few weeks later for $750

might not be a good reference, was in 1976 .................. LOL

lot of work, real or not there are a lot of SS clones and it is hard to tell. Missing the original drivetrain so IMO doesn't matter much on real or clone, worth about the same when finished

4 speed chevy's would have a larger hole for the shifter but not a hump like a mopar

QUICKEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED

looks like SS in grill and on fender, should have ss on rear panel betweeen tail lights in the middle and on steering wheel, maybe door panels (damn been a long time)
