I was putting my driveshaft back together getting ready to re-install my rearend tomorrow and I ran into a problem. When I put the u-joint end caps into the yoke I found out that one on the holes was ovaled out, the end cap is in there loosely and can spin. I know that this is bad and I do not plan on re-installing my driveshaft with this yoke. The bad yoke is from a small block 727 trans (5 1/4" shaft), I got to thinking, I have a big block 727 trans sitting in the corner, I pulled out the yoke, but I was surprised to find it was almost an 1 3/8" longer (6 1/2"). I looked at the splines inside and they are the same length, but the shaft comes out an extra 1 3/8". Can I use the BB Yoke in the small block trans? If not, anyone have one for sale?

I cant help you with getting the part you need, but I wouldnt use the longer yoke. I would think that any play would have that much more leverage with the longer yoke. May have a tendency to wear or wallow things out.

The longer one might be better, but you would have to make sure it dosn't bottom out in the trans. If the longer section just rides in mid air inside the trans, there would be no benifit. However if the bushing in the trans is that big I would stick with the longer yoke and just get one from an auto wrecker.

If I was at home I would measure mine, as my drive shafft is out. I won't be home until Tues.

The short one is the one that was in the trans, the longer one is the extra one I have. Another question is, is the short one a 904 or 727 yoke? I'm not sure what the guy who had the car before me did.

I've seen at least four different types/lengths of yokes on these things, but the splines are pretty much all the same. Except for some of the late OD 4sp output shafts, they are all intechangeable to some degree. My A833 is presently using the yoke off a BB 727. Looks like in your case you could test for travel as Keith mentions above, and if necessary just cut an inch off. There's no spline there anyway.

The one in my 68 Cuda is exactly like your big block yoke and my trans. is a small block and it works fine. It really don't matter though since the output shaft in both a big block trans and small block trans are exactly the same. The part that is not splined will slip over the unsplined area of the output shaft for more support. IMHO it is a better one to use. Just do like the other guys said and test for enough free play. When you have the car sitting on all four tires the driveshaft should be able to go into the trans. another 3/4" from it's normal position.

I slid the long one into my trans, is fits fine, it does not bottom out, so I went ahead and used it anyway. Its very possible that the short one did not belong there, so the long one it is.

The long yoke is the 727 yoke, the short one is an 833 yoke, or at least all (4) of the yokes that came out of my 833's were short like that one and all (5) of my long yokes that came out of 727's look like the long one.
