Need help with timing

-
Spec of the engine would be helpful if other than stock.
I would start at TDC and advance it from there until I hear it ping, then back off 2 degrees.
Rate of vacuum advance and the mechanical advance are an issue since not all distributors are not the same.

My 360 is mildly built, i can't seem to find my cam card but its bored .30 over. Federal speed pro pistons, Edelbrock 750 carb, Edelbrock r.p.m. Air gap intake, March pulleys, TTI 3 inch headers,Mallory 6al hyfire ignition box, Mallory uni lite distributor,Accel armor shield braided plug wires. we are down to the nitty gritty here and hopefully it will be ready for Fall Fling. Your help is much appreciated.

Usually anything between 12 and 14 initial is a good start and limiting to 34 or 36 total in by 2500 is about average. I use a vacuum guage to set my initial and keep bumping it up until I get the vacuum signal that I want. Then I check what the timing is at, and take the dist to the shop and say "I want x amount of mechanical advance" x being total minus initial.
