Hey all, This is to be the first post of many, I'm sure. I just bought a '71 Duster with a 318, and the guy said it had a 904 behind it, but my numbers are starting to seem a little off. Can anyone tell me what a PK4431428 9705 is. I'm looking to do a rebuild on it, and would like any information year, type, what it originally came from. Thanks!

Count the number of bolts and view the transmission pan shape on the automatic transmission. According to the Teufert website the Torqueflite 727 has an irregular-shaped pan with 14 bolts fastening the pan to the bottom of the transmission housing. The Torqueflite 904 has 14 bolts with a rectangular-shaped pan with one corner on an angle. See diagrams below.

How to read PK4431428 9705 to make sense

PK..........plant code....Kokomo
4431 428 part number Not a good number
.............For a 70 or 71 should start with 34?? or 35?? except early 70 727 which start with 2892
9705......date code....suggests the transmission was made 22 Feb., 1988. http://maxwedge.com/articles/10k.php Mopar 10,000 day calendar.

I double checked to make sure that you hadn't come up with a case part number by mistake. No luck.

It is highly possible that a much later model year transmission has been installed. Or at the very least a later model case was installed. Mopar started using the 904 when the LA 273 was introduced in 64. There was a gear ratio change in 77 ???, and another in 1981 when first gear was changed from 2.45:1 to 2.70:1.

Based off of this document which ends in '86 with 4412002 part number. To me suggests the date code and the 4431 of yours is likely a 88 model trans of origin unknown to me. See if you can find a VIN number on the other side on a small pad,

The tranny was built in late feb 1988,and the part number does fall into that catagory for a early year 904.Check to see if it has a lock up clutch convertor if it,s out of the car,or over ride, any sensors on the unit, mrmopartech

you might check, that you may also have a newer 318 engine, the 71' number should be 3515806 to be original.

Thank you all for such quick responses. I don't have it out of the old girl, so I can't check for the additional features as of yet. Though, I did find that my 318 is a 4006730-318-3.

You might luck out and have a A998 or A999. (Basically a beefed up A904)

I lucked out with mine, I found what I thought was a A904, until I deciphered the production code date (9937 = about October 11, 1988, for the 89' model year) and saw the rest of the code:

PK4505170 9937 9574.

This thing was stashed in the back of an old work van (but it did not come from the van, the van had the A500 still in it).

Come to find out it was off of a 1989 Dodge diplomat cop car, and when I took it apart it has a 5 direct clutch discs and 4 rear clutch discs.
Definately a keeper, I had the transmission shop do away with lockup system, so now its a non-lockup A999.

It'll be right at home behind my 360.

Awesome, Tantibus! I was actually contemplating the possibly of it being an A999. That would be awesome, but I have been unable to confirm or deny.

Although I did try looking up your codes. I couldn't come up with anything. There was a brief mention about your codes on the Ramcharger Central website. But it was still pretty vague.

Here: http://ramchargercentral.com/vehicle-help/i-seriously-need-an-overdrive/

If you can't pull up any codes then...
The next best way to tell what it really is to take it apart and see how many clutch discs you have. And to see if you have 3(904) or 4(998-999) planetary gears.

This is when I first took it out of my A999:
(As you can see on the right, there are 4 planetary gears)
