need id of cam, pistons and tappet help

hey dudes...i got new tappets from mopar and their is no hole where the pushrod sits ontop of the tappet. the ones in the engine had them?....does anyone else know if this is just a design change or?...
also, the piston tops are black...i dont know much about the different pistons out there...can anyone help with the id of those?
last, i have a pic of the back of the cam...looks like an isky cam....does anyone know how i can tell what cam i have...and any info on that?...
hold on, one more thing...i know i have a 340 block...but can anyone help me with the casting numbers on the heads....im assuming those are j heads...but does the big 360 number mean they are 360 heads...i have no clue.......thanks for any help guys...

yep. TRW L2316 is a .030 340 piston.

Heads are 73 340 heads, same as the J heads. They also came on 360]s through about 74-75 IIRC.

Pistons are the 68-70 10.5 compression replacement pistons. They are decent pieces but way two tons...
 
well cam guys.....here comes a question...could i go with a more agressive cam and stick withthe 2200 stall that is in the trans...remember that i bought this 340 eng and trans, all gone through, (but it was 3 years ago and has been sitting since...) and i dont have all the specs really...so im taking the engine apart to see what i have for cam pistons etc. ive been told around 350 for hp...i will have replaced every gasket except for the rear main....should i do that too?...or are they pretty bulletproof...?and any idea on the heads?

The lifters will work fine as long as they are hydraulic. The pushrods make a difference as far as oiling to the rockers in addition to the rocker shafts.

You can run a bit more cam than that stick. Comp XE268H runs good. Maybe a Lunati 60402. 2200 stall will get it rolling fine.

If you can get to teh main seal and see if it's not dried out, it may be OK if the rope style. The Neoprene style will likely be ok. Might try to bet some oil on the lips.

That cam is just a tick more than stock, so I suppose it depends on what you are wanting to do with this. I'll be running the VooDoo in my 318, either the 401 or the 402. But my setup isn't for "go"
 
Those are early pattern Mopar lifters. AMC and Magnum type lifters have the hole to oil the top through the pushrods. Most now only supply the later type.

Comp has a "Thumpr" line of cams that have a rougher idle but claim to still retain good street manners.
 
hey, thanks for input, found out today at work that the holes in the middle of the tappets, were for magnum heads like you said...so im under the impression that i dont need them because i have 340 heads for la block. and i checked those cams out...wow, pricey mcpricerton and the mcpricer 5....
 
Those lifters will work fine.

Magnums oil the top end through the pushrods. Put stock LA style pushrods in and you'll be fine.
