Should there be a switch that prevents starting if car is in gear (with clutch pedal not depressed)?
I noted today there is none. Also back-up lights are wired but do not have power to them. Car has had an engine and tranny swap.

You talking about stick or automatic? Stick shift cars did not have a clutch switch until 70

Go to MyMopar and download a factory service manual free, and also the aftermarket wiring diagrams there, which are sometimes easier to follow but not as detailed. I believe the backup lamp power originates from a half moon shaped connector in the instrument panel harness. This goes to a column switch or the console for automatics, and somehow feeds through the wiper section of the bulkhead connector and down the firewall to the transmission if stick shift.

White and violet wires if I recall

I am asking a different question about the lock- out function of a NSS. 'thnx"

383 4spd (as per title of thread.)

Manual trans cars (from our era) don't have neutral safety switches.

OK thanks anyway - someone just reminded me our cars in the day were not equipped with such a magical device (no wonder I am in such a habit of pushing in the clutch before key ever hits ignition switch..)

 That's an outstanding habit for any car new or old.
