OK, they tell me that the only way to learn something is to ask questions. well here goes. Pictured below is a pic of a switch in the 4 speed.2 prong. also a pic of a switch I just bought, 3 prong. that is the switch I asked about earlier if the one out of the 904 would work in this 4 speed. some of you guys said yes it would. tell me how this 4 speed is going to tell the difference in these switches. The back up lights worked on the Dart with the 3 prong in it on the 904, however my son did accidentally started the car one day in drive. I am assuming the switch was bad. right.............what all does this 3 prong switch operate. I guess I can just plug the old connector into this new switch when it is in the 4 speed and it will do the same thing or will I have to rewire it. is the center prong ground on this switch. someone school this old man in what I need to know here. Thanks,Bill

I believe the three prong setup is a combination neutral safety/reverse lights switch used in automatics. The 2 prong swith on the 4 speed is for reverse lights only, the neutral safety (if equipped) would be found on the clutch pedal, not the transmission itself.

ok,thanks. I guess I will be able to just plug this connector in just like on the 904 and still have the back ups just like before. what are the 3 prongs for on this then.

The two outer prongs on the auto trans switch work the reverse lights just like the two prongs on the 4 speed switch. The two switches are not interchangeable

The center post on the auto switch goes to ground and runs up to one of the "push on" terminals on the starter relay

If you have a 70/ later car with a functional clutch safety switch, that same relay terminal is where the clutch pedal switch is hooked, IE the clutch pedal must be dpressed to crank

There is no "neutral safety" on manual gearbox cars.

I returned the 3 prong switch and bought a new 2 prong switch for the back up lights. I will work the neutral safety switch in on the pedal and wire it there. thanks guys for the help. learning a lot on these 2 cars I have had to mess with.

On the early cars pre 70 the relay was different for a 4 speed which can be used. They did not have a clutch switch and the corner tap was not there.

You can just ground the lower corner tab on your relay and it will work fine. You just won't have to apply the clutch to start it.

ok, thanks steve. this I believe is a 71. so on the 3 prong connector that went to the 904 tranny I had in it, I guess I will take the outer 2 terminals and hook to the 2 prong switch on the 4 speed and what do I do with the center prong. does that term. go to the switch on the pedal or is it eliminated. is that one gnd. I noticed a wire that came out of the block on the firewall that I had marked as a neutral safety but didn't use it when I wired the car last time. will that wire now go to the switch on the pedal. I think it was a green wire. I will have to retrace the schematic again.
