Follow up to my 383 Formula S rant. I’m now on to the initial start up and break in of a new cam, any pointers to help me out, , rpm, time how to prime the Holley?

Kids liquid medicine syringe to fill the bowls on a holley. Get them filled and work the squirters. Then get into proper location of window.

Set timing for fire up around 16-18* BTDC

Get it started up to 2200-2500, then get timing light and set timing at 35-40*. Vary RPM a couple hundred in that range for 20-25 minutes or so.

Prime the oil system until there is pressure on the gauge.

I usually give a couple of shots with a squirt bottle of gas instead of the accelerator pumps because the intake manifold will be dry as a bone.

Breaking the cam in at 2500 is to insure the lifters spin in the bores. If they don't start spinning you will wipe lobes out. To insure they are spinning look at the pushrods after break in they should be spinning with the lifter.

Double check all your ignition wiring and make sure you have power to the ecu and coil. Also make sure its going to fire on #1 (lots of cases of distributors 180 out). I also used a procedure (I'm a little fuzzy on exactly what I did) to make sure my initial timing was in the ballpark. Basically turn the crankshaft to somewhere before TDC (15-30 deg) and turn the distributor so the rotor has just gone past #1.
