New??? (gear drive product for SB)

I never heard or seen these guys before. The oly ones I have seen were from Milodon (*I think it was*) at 3 times the price.
Parts of this nature I would trust only to a company like a well known one.

Even the good (expensive?) ones sound like a marble factory to me. I really don't like the sounds emitted from the engine with the gear drive installed.

God, I LOVE the sound of a straight-cut gear drive! Then again, I'm a big fan of noise..... after all, I did delete my radio so I can enjoy the Flowmaster's.

I also came *this close* to buying a used Milodon for my motor only because I couldn't bring myself to drop $320 on a new unit.

Hmmm.... the motor's still out on the stand. Only a hundred bucks, huh? I'm going to research this, Christmas is coming....

This is the e-mail I sent the seller:

I have a few questions since this is the first time I'm seeing an in-expensive SB Mopar gear drive. Why solid lifter cams only? Will it fit inside the stock timing chain cover? Do I have to do any modifing on my block to bolt this on, such as drilling & tapping? And most importantly, WHERE is it made? Thanks!

Let's see what the deal is with these as I'm interested in one. Provided it's worth it...

I also forgot to ask about the fuel pump eccentric and if it can be used and/or modified, such as the Milodon set-up requires. I have to send a second message to them.

BTW: The Milodon unit is advertised at $435....

I play accoustic guitar and run quiet timing chains. Different strokes for different folks. :) Let's have a (quiet) beer. :drinkers: :toothy7:

Deal....

I received a reply today (on Thanksgiving no less....) about the gear drive. The only message in the e-mail said simply "Some minor modifications...." are necessary to make it fit.

I sent a second e-mail asking where & what type of "minor modifications...." are required. If I have to slice the fuel pump eccentric or grind the timing chain cover for clearance, fine. If I need to start drilling & tapping the block, I need some more details. Let's face it, there must be quite a few brand X's running these inexpensive gear drives without incident. After all, it's just a couple of steel gears splined together.

Damn it... I love noise.

My reply said that I can use the fuel pump eccentric, and the factory cover...so Im guessing tapping the block will be necessary..... :blah5:

I wish these jokers would realise that information actually creates sales....and doesn't prevent them. :cussing:

I have a buddy that imports cars and parts to Australia....the only SB gear drive made here is worth $475 AUD....do you reckon i could sell a few of these cheap ones?. ..I just cant afford for them to start breaking on me tho..... :sad9:

Reckon I'll send him another email spelling the whole deal out..... :pain10:

I mentioned I knew other Mopar owners who would like details on this new product too. Hopefully I'll get more than a 1/2 a sentence reply....

We'll see.

Heres the reply I got....bit of a sales pitch unfo...

These gear are made off shore. But we guarantee the quality is well
better than Milodon. Because the finish has one grade better than
Milodon. We stand behind our products fir life time limited warranty.
Modification is similar as Milodon.

Sincerely
CrankShaft Depot eStore

What is the Milodon modification?

What is the Milodon modification?

I believe it involves drilling & tapping a bolt hole & cutting the fuel pump eccentric. Otherwise it fits under the cover. As far as being made "off shore...." if you go to the CAT web page there's a similar gear drive for sale, but at $125 instead of the $100 advertised in the auction. The factory chain tensioner also requires drilling the block IIRC.

Hmmm.... I'm still on the fence with this one. They sell a bunch of stroker cranks and rods all the time....why not an inexpensive gear drive.
