Would it be any problem to put a 1980 or newer 904 behind my 72 slant?

The transmission may bolt up with no problem, but the torque converter may have the wrong pilot size and therefore not mate into the engine. I'm not familiar with the 1980 904, however if you need a custom torque converter "chris's transmissions" high performance shop that can build you a custom one for around $300.

The small crank register was pre-1968 225's and all 170s. Do not use the 72 torque convertor. 1980 trans would very likely havee a lockup convertor and needs a lockup convertor.

It shouldn't be any problem as long as it's a slip yoke transmission and you include it's converter as mcnoople stated. Just swap over the speedo gear and housing, and the shift/kickdown links.

Sorry typo in my above post... If you still need another torque converter custom made it's Hughes transmissions. They're online. They are pretty knowledgable too if you have any more transmission related Q's.
